🎬 ON LOCATION AT ACORN BANK MILL WITH CULGAITH PRIMARY SCHOOL

On Tuesday I was back at Acorn Bank Mill near Penrith filming the first part of our drama with the Year 5 and 6 pupils from Culgaith Primary School. We're producing a film about river power and water mills 😊.

Frances and her team had the mill fully running for us, and the working machinery became the backdrop for our young actors. And our word‑perfect actors brought great energy but quickly discovered that filming isn’t that glamorous… By the afternoon the rest of the class joined us for a mill tour and to watch filming in action.

We worked right up to the wire through rain, sleet and plenty of technical head‑scratching — especially because the plan is that our Victorian characters appear to the modern children via an iPad screen. (note to self: keep it simple next time 🤣)

I slept very well that night, I can tell you 😴. Keeping video, sound, continuity and direction all in my head at once honestly feels like the work of a team of ten. And I'm only 5' 2"...

Huge thanks to Malcolm from the North Pennines National Landscape Team for stepping in as assistant director — couldn’t have done it without you 👊🏻.

Next stop: filming our Victorian cast… wish me luck!

SMALL DEVICE, BIG DIFFERENCE - INTRODUCING ABIGAIL'S STORY

I love this story! This year I've been working with Dr Karen Perkins and her team at UHMBT's Blood Sciences Department to produce a series of films about Blood! One of the films tells Abi's Story - and it's powerful. In fact... don't read on - just hit PLAY now and have a watch ❤️

Back in January I went out to film Abi and her mum, Heather, as they talked about the years of distress they faced every time Abi needed a blood test. Abi was so needle phobic that even with months of preparation, it was still traumatic for her — something many families of people with learning disabilities will recognise all too well.

And then University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust introduced a pioneering new TAP blood test: a painless, touch‑activated device designed specifically to help people who can’t tolerate needles. Filming Abi and Heather describe the difference this has made was incredibly moving. Their lives — and the lives of so many others — have genuinely been changed by this innovation.

This is such an uplifting story, especially told through film. Working with the Blood Sciences Team at UHMBT, and with Abi and Heather, has been a joy. In these uncertain days, it was heartening to make a film that reflects the ingenuity of people determined to do things differently — and better 😊

What an incredible Wednesday afternoon at Heysham Golf Club ’s Dementia Golf Café as part of their 'FORE'GET ME NOT Golf Project! The clubhouse was absolutely buzzing — packed full of golfers, carers, families and the amazing volunteers who make this event happen every month.

I feel genuinely lucky to be involved in filming projects that have such a positive impact on people’s lives. While capturing B‑roll, I overheard so many conversations about how much everyone looks forward to the Café and the difference it makes. That sense of community was everywhere.

And despite the force‑ten gales sweeping down the fairways 💨😲, people were still determined to get out there and have a go at driving, pitching and putting. That enthusiasm is exactly what makes this project so special.

These films I’m producing with Nigel Thompson will help Tim and the Dementia Golf Charity roll this initiative out to the other 1,800 golf clubs across the UK. If Wednesday was anything to go by, we definitely bottled some love for this infectious project!

'FORE'GET ME NOT GOLF
Driving change, one café at a time (Driving...geddit?!) ⛳️

I’m really excited to be working on another local film project at the moment — this time with Heysham Golf Club and the wonderful Dr Tim Barry, who’s leading the Fore’ Get Me Not Golf initiative. It’s a dementia‑friendly golf café that brings people together for gentle activity, connection, and a warm welcome.

Heysham is one of only a handful of clubs in the UK currently running this scheme, and the hope is to roll it out to all 1,800 golf clubs across the country. Being able to capture these early steps — and the impact it’s already having — feels powerful.

It’s also been great to be working with journalist and podcast producer Nigel Thompson again after a little while. Always lovely to catch up and collaborate on projects like these 😊.

I really enjoy connecting with local projects like this one. They remind me how powerful community can be when people come together with kindness and purpose.

Here’s a few 'piece to camera' shots from filming last week with Tim — more to come as the story unfolds. ⛳💛

Hands Up… Who’s Playing Bowls? 🎥💚

I’ve just released a new short film — and this one is personal. In fact it's one of very few of my films in which I star!

Palatine Bowling Club has been part of our community for as long as anyone can remember, and over the last six years we’ve been working hard to bring it back to life as a safe, welcoming, accessible space for everyone. This film tells the story of why Palatine matters, what we’ve achieved so far, and what we still need to do to secure its future.

If the film moves you, please consider donating to our Crowdfunder.

We’re so close to unlocking vital Sport England match funding — and every single contribution helps us finish the job:

restoring the green
installing benches so the community can sit and natter
purchasing community bowling sets
and creating a space where people of all ages can belong

This project blends everything I care about: community, creativity, and giving people a place to feel proud of. Thank you for supporting local spaces, local stories, and the people who keep them going.

💚 Let’s make sure Palatine thrives for generations to come.

Last week I headed up to Acorn Bank Mill to film the milling process for a new Eden Rivers Trust project all about the power of rivers. We’re creating a mini‑drama with the Year 5 pupils from Culgaith CofE Primary School — where modern children meet Victorian children who reveal just how incredible river-powered engineering can be.

I’m always mesmerised by the shapes, shadows and sheer ingenuity of Victorian machinery. It's great to film. The way the river’s energy is captured through those turning cogs to produce flour is genuinely beautiful.

Huge thanks to Frances, Carl and Martin from Acorn Bank Watermill — my millers for the day — for sharing their expertise and sending me home with a bag of Acorn Bank Mill flour and a recipe book 😋.

Watch this space… lots more to come!

Throwback to my early hyperlapse days at the Ashton Memorial.

I love watching hyperlaspses - they mesmorise me 😲. Hyperlapse is basically moving timelapse: take a photo, move 60cm, line up the exact same point, shoot again — all within about 10 seconds — and repeat. For this 20‑second clip I produced a few years ago, I took over 300 photos and made overn 300 tiny moves, using the very top of the Memorial as my anchor. Then everything went through Lightroom and into a video timeline to create that smooth glide effect. It was a very pleasant way to spend an afternoon in Lancaster and I learned a lot!

I was so focused on keeping the alignment perfect that I completely missed a whole wedding party coming down the steps for their group photo. Only spotted them later in the edit. I suspect they didn't notoce me either 😂

Still love this little experiment.

🎬 Behind the Scenes at Blood Sciences, Morecambe Bay

Over the past few weeks I’ve had the privilege of filming with the incredible Blood Sciences Team across our Morecambe Bay hospitals — and honestly, it’s been amazing.

I’m not sure what I expected a Blood Sciences Department to look like. Maybe a few glass slides, some pipettes, a quiet room humming away in the background. But you don’t know what you don’t know, do you?

What I found instead was a fast‑moving, 24/7 operation filled with skilled, focused people whose work underpins almost every treatment decision. Blood tests don’t sleep — and neither does this team.

Here are a few shots from my time with the Lancaster crew.

🎥 Films coming soon — and trust me, they’re worth the wait 😊.

Last year I was commissioned by producer Heather Aspinall to work as DoP on her short film TRAPPED MAGIC. Heather first made this film ten years ago, and ever since she’s been raising the funds to bring it back with a professional team behind her.

People like Heather are rare — she doesn’t just dream big, she makes things happen.
We filmed over six days across the year, each shoot getting stronger as the ideas and energy grew. It was a joy to be part of.

Good luck to Heather — I hope this helps her pitch to the BBC for a Children’s drama commission. And if not, someone really should make a documentary about the very tenacious Heather Aspinall 👊🏻

Mattresses are one of the trickiest items we throw away, but they don’t have to end up in landfill. I produced this film with Lancashire County Council to show how they can be broken down and recycled into useful materials. Absolutely NOTHING goes to waste!

It’s a small glimpse into the bigger picture of how we can all help reduce waste in Lancashire. This film will be used by LCC to show people what happens when they they take their mattress to a recycling centre (aka a tip!!) 😊

Getting a new TV this Christmas? Here's the story of what happens to your old one!

This is one of a series of short films I have been producing for Lancashire County Council to explain where our rubbish goes. Who knew? all Lancashire tellies end up in Halifax 😲.

It's amazing what you learn when you're out and about filming - did you know that there is a jewellers in London which sells jewellery from gold which has been recycled from TVs?!
