This year marks a momentous occasion as The Royal British Legion in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland officially celebrate their Centenary, now formally recognised as a full part of the National RBL movement.

As we commemorate 80 years since the end of World War II, we pause to honour the memory of those who served, those who sacrificed, and the few veterans who remain with us today.

We are proud to announce that The Royal British Legion will be performing at this yearโ€™s Tattoo, joining us in tribute, remembrance, and unity. Donโ€™t miss this powerful moment of reflection and celebration.

The Battle of the Somme (1 July - 18 November 1916) was a joint operation between British and French forces intended to achieve a decisive victory over the Germans on the Western Front. For many in Britain, the resulting battle remains the most painful and infamous episode of the First World War.

In December 1915, Allied commanders had met to discuss strategies for the upcoming year and agreed to launch a joint French and British attack in the region of the River Somme in the summer of 1916. Intense German pressure on the French at Verdun throughout 1916 made action on the Somme increasingly urgent and meant the British would take on the main role in the offensive.

The British had some success in the south, where the 30th and 18th (Eastern) Divisions took all of their objectives around Montauban and the 7th Division captured Mametz. At Thiepval, the 36th (Ulster) Division seized the Schwaben Redoubt, but was forced to withdraw because of lack of progress on its left and right. French forces operating to the south of the River Somme also achieved some success.

These limited gains came at a high cost. The first day of the Somme was the deadliest day in British military history โ€“ of the 57,470 British casualties, 19,240 men had been killed. But there was no question of suspending the offensive with the French still heavily engaged at Verdun. Ultimately the Battle of the Somme would continue for another four months. It became an attritional battle of limited territorial gain, but one that taught British commanders important lessons for later fighting on the Western Front.

The evening before the Battle of the Somme, which began on July 1, 1916, saw British troops bracing for the attack after a week of intense bombardment. Many soldiers were given rum, with some becoming heavily intoxicated, while others, like one soldier who recounted the experience, chose to remain sober. The bombardment, which began on June 24th, aimed to cripple the German defenses, but it was hampered by poor weather and limited counter-battery fire. Despite the bombardment, the British were optimistic about a "rapid advance".
