Lewannick’s much-loved annual May Day celebrations return today, with events kickstarting at 1pm!
What started as a small group of children doing some dancing over 30 years ago, is now a full afternoon of fun and games, attended by hundreds each year.
This year's event is set to feature traditional maypole dancing, a craft and produce market, barbecue, grand draw, and lots of entertainment.
Traditionally, May Day celebrates the coming of summer and, historically, featured feasts and dancing in towns and villages, as well as appointing two people in the community to lead the celebrations as ‘Lord’ and ‘Lady’. Moving into the Victorian era, only one girl would be selected as the ‘May Queen’, dressed in all-white with a flower crown placed upon her head.
So head over to Lewannick and join the celebrations! Happy Bank Holiday!
