Preparing for Adventure 🥾⛰️

Claire Pearce, our advertising lead - who many of you will have chatted to if you’ve ever advertised with us - is taking on the ultimate adventure this autumn.

In November, she sets off across the globe, landing in India to walk the Himalayan Foothills. She’s doing this to support a charity close to the hearts of many here in Cornwall: Children’s Hospice South West.

As a mother herself, this challenge is going to be a big moment for her. In addition to pushing her body to the limit, tackling tricky terrain and high points in the foothills, this will be the first time away from her family.

Claire says: “Thank you to everyone who has already donated. This is such a remarkable charity that supports so many children with life limiting and terminal conditions, as well as supporting their families.”

Claire is trying to raise £3,500 for CHSW. Arguably a very important day in the Cornish calendar…it’s NATIONAL CREAM TEA DAY! 🍓

Honestly, any excuse to slap a load of jam and cream on a scone and shovel it in!

In all seriousness, though, National Cream Tea Day highlights all the wonderful places to source a cream tea, whether you want to treat yourself in the comfort of your own home, or would rather head out to a local cafe or pub to have yours.

On this very special day, we wanted to give a shoutout to the queen of scones and baking, Amy Vercoe, cafe manager of Pencarrow’s Peacock Cafe.

Amy grew up watching her granny and mum bake delicious treats, so it was only natural that she too would turn to this craft. She makes amazing cakes, but is famed for her scones - a family recipe Amy has adapted along the way.

Want to try it for yourself? Head to Pencarrow House and Gardens and order one of Amy’s amazing cream teas!

You can read Amy’s story on pages 8 & 9 in your summer Bodmin Life magazine.

A wayside marker, honouring a significant Quaker burial site in Cornwall, is to be unveiled on Saturday.

Tregongeeves, St Austell, was once a site for Quakers to bury and remember their loved ones. In the 1960s, a road widening scheme there meant that 111 bodies buried between 1664 and 1965 had to be removed and reburied so the work could go ahead - a necessary yet sad moment for local Quakers.

But this Saturday, Barry, Quakers and Friends will gather to celebrate a new 7ft slate wayside marker to acknowledge the site’s significance. A Perennial Blush rose has also been planted there, a symbol of peace in light of current world events.
