A week ago we learnt the latest volunteer-led organisations that have been commended with The King's Award for Voluntary Service (KAVS). Equivalent to an MBE, KAVS is the highest Award given to local voluntary groups in the UK, and they are awarded for life.

Our most local Surrey-based organisations awardees for 2025 are:

💜 Spelthorne Dementia Support

CONGRATULATIONS to all three! We understand the process and know it is fully deserved!

We look back on what a year we have had since our KAVS award was granted to us and the extreme pride that it made us all feel!

Gosh! How are we two weeks on since G-Man's mammoth 16-hour broadcast for World Mental Health Day 🌍

It's World Mental Health Day and the presenters are going to be gathering around G-Man this evening to to raise a glass and set him off on his 16-hour radio-thon for Mary Frances Trust and Mind.

On the Free Your Spirit show, Alanah spoke with Courtney from TRE Surrey about trauma and the power of healing after life-changing experiences. The focus was on rebuilding trust, safety, and learning to feel comfortable in your own skin.

Courtney was joined by her 17-year-old daughter, Madi, as they shared their deeply moving story - surviving a hijacking in South Africa ten years ago, and their ongoing journey of recovery and resilience.

A heartfelt and inspiring conversation reminding us that healing is possible 💚

We’re so excited to welcome our local theatre school to our radio family with their very own show — produced and presented by students of The Theatre Academy! This month, it’s one hour with Henry and Isabella you definitely don’t want to miss!

This month’s show features big shoutouts to the Mole Valley Arts Alive Festival, running all October, and “The Interpretation of Dance”, an inspiring photography and art exhibition at The Leatherhead Theatre until 18th October 🖼️

The 10th of October is World Mental Health Day. To mark the day our very own G-Man is taking on an incredible challenge: a 16-hour live broadcast to raise vital funds for charities supporting our local community.

Starting at 5pm Friday and powering through the night until just before Saturday’s breakfast show, G-Man will be joined by friends, family, fellow presenters, and mental health professionals to keep the energy high and the conversation flowing.

Where has September gone?!

It’s been a month of milestones here at Surrey Hills Community Radio:
🎉 G-Man marked one year on air (and launched a brand-new monthly show The Other Side of G-Man).
🎉 Lee from The Feel Good Show celebrated two years.
🎉 DJ Azza hit an incredible TEN years behind the decks!

We also welcomed back Chris Braid, teaming up with his sister Laura Kerbey for The After Party, an initiative set up by and for adults who are neurodivergent and struggling with their mental health and/or addiction. Plus Chris Stagg sat down with Mick Baker to chat about his autobiographical book series detailing a life of various states of employment, brushes with the law and being in a band.

With many of our presenters taking late summer holidays or adjusting to new school timetables, September’s been a little quieter… but October? We’re back at full power.... we think! ⚡📻
