WRC - FIA World Rally Championship Portugal Update

**An extra stage has been added on this afternoon**

1. Fourmaux 2. Pajari 3. Ogier

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing WRC

As expected, the Toyotas have been strong, Elfyn Evans setting good pace from the front. Pajari has locked in once again with a confident drive. Ogier has been off the pace this morning but finishes the loop in 3rd and Oliver Solberg is down to 5th. Katsuta hasn't managed to settle into the car on gravel so far.

Hyundai Motorsport

Against the trend so far this year, Fourmaux leads the pack by 7.7s after SS6 driving well. Neuville is fin 4th pushing on, but won SS6, the final stage of the loop. Sordo had a slight off on SS5, missing a slight left but survived to finish the stage Sordo has also struggled on the hard tires, ruing having to pick the tires the night before.

M-Sport

Consistent progress so far from the Ford team, Jon Armstrong Rally is going well but slightly cautious and so far having an uneventful rally, which is a good thing. Josh McErlean has been rebuilding his confidence after a tricky start to his year. He remains the fastest Ford driver. Martins Sesks Rally has been struggling in the Puma, with too much time out of the car and possibly not happy with the set up.

Can Lancia continue their winning streak onto Gravel?

One of of rallying’s legacy brands to have made a comeback is Lancia. The Italian team have shown great strides forwards of late and have proved themselves worthy winners securing victory on last time out on Islas Canarias. With one of the classic WRC events laying before them can the Italian powerhouse continue their winning streak onto the Portuguese gravel?

Yohan Russell seems to think so

“I expect it to be the same and improve the speed on every stage,” he said, when asked what he expects from the Lancia on gravel.

On the latest episode Jon Armstrong talked about how to bring a new audience to the Rally Championship, through maximising the wealth of footage owned by the operator.

With a new promoter likely to take over the helm later this year, could this be an option to revive the wider popularity of the sport?
