Breaking news at Leeds United as the major stadium expansion is approved!

Leeds City Council has just given the green light for the redevelopment of Elland Road, with plans to take the stadium capacity from 37,000 to 53,000. It will make it the seventh largest club stadium in the UK ⚽

Notable changes are to the Kop and the West Stand, which will both be partially demolished and expanded. The West Stand will double in size, with space for 17,750 fans, a sensory room and even a ‘museum’ (but details on that are limited at the moment!).

The redevelopment of the stadium is expected to generate 600,000 new visitors a year and help Leeds United meet demands for tickets, with 26,000 supporters currently on the season ticket waiting list 🫨

And panic over, the club has confirmed that away fans WILL continue to be housed in the West Stand, with the South Stand remaining home supporters only 🤍

Councillors voted 11 to 1 in favour of the redevelopment in today’s meeting.

It is hoped that work will be complete before the Women’s World Cup in 2035!

Touring the maze of old prison cells in the basement of Leeds Town Hall! 🤯

Directly below the town hall steps is where you’ll find the oldest Victorian jails - built in 1864 and holding prisoners awaiting appearances above in the city’s courtroom. They were windowless calls holding up to four prisoners each - all with shackles on their ankles and wrists.🔐

By 1905 the Victorian cells were condemned and a more ‘modern’ Leeds Bridwell replaced them in the 1930s - stretching across much of the Oxford Place side of Leeds Town Hall’s basement. Demand continued to increase for cells - so police were moved out to new municipal buildings so the Bridewell could be extended again 🚔

That last court hearings took place in Leeds Town Hall in the early 1990s, with the new Leeds Magistrates Court opening in 1993. Now the old cells are used mainly for storage, with the court room occasionally used for Emmerdale filming before the ‘once in a generation’ refurb of Leeds Town Hall got underway.

The ongoing works on the Grade 1 listed building will see the creation of a new box office, accessible entrance and bar to transform concert and event facilities at Leeds Town Hall - with plenty of structural improvements happening too, and a complete refurb of the famous organ.

A day in Leeds that will go down in history 🤪🤍

Take us back to 5th May 2025, when it felt like the whole of Leeds had descended on the city centre to celebrate Leeds United’s promotion to the Premier League 🏆

As the year draws to a close, we wanted to look back at the moment life peaked in 2025 🙏

A last-minute victory at Plymouth, record-breaking 100 point tally and the Championship title made for a surreal end to the season and one epic May Bank Holiday 🤩

Ethan Ampadu and the team’s antics aboard the open-top bus parade dominated the headlines for days, and it felt like Leeds were on top of the world 🌍

May the FIFTH be etched in our memories for the rest of time 😇

Three official reasons Leeds really is the best city on Earth! 😏🌍

What a year we’ve had - these three independents really did put Leeds on the map in 2025!

The Highland Laddie took the trophy for the Best Boozer in Britain, according to The Good Food Guide 👏 The team behind it also owns the popular Empire Cafe 👌

Leeds is home to the best ice cream man in the country too (really!) 🍦Ian Smith AKA ‘Mr Whippy Leeds’ used to be based over in Roundhay, but now you’ll find his iconic pink and white van on Briggate 📍

You’ll even find the best kebab in the country, courtesy of Sqew! Deliveroo voted on it, and Luke Littler even fronted the award! Their authentic Middle Eastern cuisine is a big hit - and the salad here is just as fresh as it looks 😋

Well done to all three winners for doing Leeds proud in 2025!

Three of the biggest openings in Leeds this year that got the city talking! 🥳

We’ve welcomed plenty of new venues in the last 12 months, but these three really have stood out!

First up, one of the grandest looking openings, Giggling Squid moved into the old Royal Bank of Scotland building on Park Row and brought their popular Thai tapas to the city centre 🤩

Next up is No No Wine Bar under the arches at Granary Wharf! It’s all about wine here - there’s over 80 different bottles from all around the world 🍷 Plus, it’s all paired with BaoBros23’s Asian Fusion bites!

Finally, a UK first also found its home in Leeds! Point Blank is the first simulated shooting bar in the country! They’ve got loads of games here, from target practice to 1v1s.You can also find them in Manchester and Newcastle!

Watch out Rudolph… the Sky Flyer is currently towering above Millennium Square and we don’t want any accidents before all the presents have been delivered! 🎁

Anyone riding the Big Wheel over by Leeds Town Hall might even spot Santa on his travels! 🎡

From all of us at Leeds+, here’s to a wonderful Christmas for everyone celebrating in our great city 🤍

Three mega US brands descend on a single street in Leeds 👀🇺🇸

One pocket of town was not shy of new openings in 2025, where queues became a common sight in Leeds city centre!

Commercial Street introduced a new Popeye’s in April, with its bright orange facade nestling in between jewellery shops down towards the Briggate end 🍗

Then came fellow fast food giant Chick-fil-A in October. This was the first to open in England, with people heading to Leeds from afar to try their famous chicken sandwich 🍔

Lastly, Blank Street arrived with a bang just last month, taking the former Starbucks unit at the corner of Commercial Street and Albion Street.

This brand is massive across the pond, known for their bold Matcha flavours 😋

Which of these have you tried?!
