1981 was a melting pot for music genres, so many new sounds, especially in dance music. Here's a quote regarding one scene at the time:- "The term white-boy funk (or blue-eyed soul and white-funk) frequently refers to the post-punk, New Romantic, and dance-rock movements of the early 1980s where British and American bands blended rhythmic funk, dub, and soul influences into electronic or rock formats."
That year saw people like Chris Sullivan, Martyn Ware and Arthur Baker embrace music of black origin and become a part of a huge shift in music. London took Jazz-Funk to new heights, German artists such as Liaisons Dangereuses and Kraftwerk pioneered their Techno sounds to influence EBM and New York Electro.
Gay clubs were playing music using sequential beats pioneered 5 years earlier in mid 70s Berlin by Giorgio Moroder as the foundations for Hi-NRG. Blondie were spreading Rap music into the mainstream. Even New Order visited New York, going to clubs like the Funhouse where Jellybean Benitez opened their eyes to the dance scene which changed their path forever.
