Artist Spotlight | North Art Member
Rachel Bentley

Rachel is a contemporary artist living in Walton, Wetherby.

Her work is deeply rooted in memory, place and lived experience, drawing constant inspiration from years spent exploring the Pennines, Moors and Dales of the Yorkshire landscape.

Rachel’s artistic practice is characterised by loose mark making and a powerful sense of atmosphere. She works primarily with acrylic, watercolour and experimental mixed media, building up rich layers that capture the changing light, weather and seasons. Whilst much of her initial work begins outdoors, her pieces are developed in the studio. She has also recently expanded her repertoire to include graphic studies of meaningful buildings (like the image shown of The Fox, Walton, to mark its reopening) and frequently enjoys experimenting with new techniques at home and with her art group, Walton Group of Artists.

Following a successful career as a business coach, health challenges led Rachel back to her art, which is now a central focus. This personal journey fuels her exploration of themes like resilience, the landscape and the vital connection between environment and wellbeing. Rachel regularly shares insights into her process and the stories behind her work on social media. She is also a proud member of Artists Around Wetherby and takes part in their annual open studios, with this year’s event taking place in June.

Rachel’s original paintings, prints and cards are available for purchase at local events and exhibitions, through selected independent stockists in Leeds and online. She is also currently open to commissions and collaborations.

We are looking for new artwork to rotate in our gallery between exhibitions.

Alongside our planned shows, we hold a selection of members’ work that we rotate throughout the gallery during exhibition changeovers. North Art champions artists by providing opportunities to show work in a supportive gallery setting, and there is no formal submission process. Artist Spotlight | North Art Member
J. Rubinstein

Jay is a maker of wooden mobiles, working in Dumfries and Galloway. Often his pieces are in response to poems or stories. The intention is to make objects that are beautiful but also carry meaning.

He looks for ways in which mobiles enable a single shape to represent different things depending on viewpoint or distance. Sometimes, images appear and disappear as the air takes the piece, or the onlooker changes perspective.

Every stage of making the mobile involves exploration, decisions and revisions. The colours produced by various timbers, the shapes it is possible to make and the shapes they suggest in turn, the stringing of the pieces and the movement in the final piece all require deliberation and experiment.

Even when making a mobile closely allied to a previous one, there is constant learning, modification and development.

It’s hard to get a proper idea of the mobiles from still images. More videos can be found on Jays Website: www.jrubinstein.co.uk

James Lee .art

James is a Leeds-based landscape artist whose work captures the beauty and raw energy of nature through a modern, dynamic lens. Painting for six years, he has developed a distinctive style that blends traditional landscape techniques with contemporary influences.

Working with bold colour and dramatic composition, James continues to reimagine the landscape genre. He regularly produces cards and prints of his work through North Art, and his staple lighthouse imagery has become a defining feature of his practice, instantly recognisable.

“I think my love and inspiration in capturing lighthouses again and again is because of what they stand for. Always there looking out for others… standing strong to protect and keep others safe.”

In 2025, James exhibited in British Artists of the Year and was selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.

The Lily and Rose series by Lorna Reay.

Available as prints or cards on our website, visit Lorna Reay's profile on North.art to order.

"For anyone like me - getting a bit long in the tooth and never all that sporty, but with an urge to climb, wakeboard and ride a big Harley Davidson - Lily and Rose provide the opportunity to have vicarious, crazy adventures without ending up in hospital. They live charmed lives, with no fear of gravity or drowning. It never occurs to them to dress 'appropriately'. Theirs is a world of fun and laughter, reminding us, perhaps, to seize the moment and live life to the full, without a forward glance or a moment of doubt. (If we dare!)"
