Did you know that the use of Uli during mourning reveals something profound about Igbo understandings of death?

In many Igbo communities, death was not seen only as sorrow or an ending. It was understood as a transition - a journey into another realm of existence. This is why the dead were adorned with Uli. Yes, the body itself became a vessel of meaning, carefully prepared for the journey ahead.

Family members of the deceased were also marked with Uli designs as a way of honouring the dead and expressing connection beyond physical life. One special design associated with mourning is uli ntuwa or uli nsewa - which means an outburst or ray of sunlight with deep spiritual and cultural significance, symbolising illumination, transition and the continuation of existence beyond death.

Uli also appeared on walls and compounds connected to mourning rituals. These markings were not just signs of loss. They were visual markers of transition and the expectation of return.

This is one of the reasons why Uli is temporary. It fades. It disappears. Yet its meaning remains.

In the beauty of Uli, the Igbo imagination found a way to honour death not only with grief, but with dignity, beauty, memory, and belief in return.
