The Reegs were a Manchester band formed in 1988 by Dave Fielding and Reg Smithies, who were both from the post-punk band The Chameleons. They teamed up with Gary Lavery on vocals and keyboards, creating a dreamy, guitar-driven sound with a bit of electronic flair that really stood out in the Manchester scene.

They released a couple of albums: Return of the Sea Monkeys (1991) and Rock the Magic Rock (1993). In 2009, a double CD called The Definitive Collection came out, gathering both albums, B-sides, and some new versions of songs.

Recently, Return of the Sea Monkeys got a limited re-release on blue vinyl—only 500 copies, all numbered. The audio’s been remastered, the artwork updated, and you can grab it on vinyl, CD, or in a bundle with a T-shirt. Perfect for fans wanting to revisit their early work with a fresh spin.

🎸 About 1919 🎸

Formed back in Bradford in 1980, 1919 were one of the original wave of UK post-punk / goth bands. Their aim was simple but powerful – to create heavy, melodic, and intense music you could actually dance to.

They first made their mark in the early ’80s with singles like Repulsion and Caged, plus a John Peel session that cemented them as ones to watch. The band split in 1984, but their cult status only grew over the years.

Fast-forward to 2014 and 1919 came roaring back. Founding guitarist Mark Tighe reunited with drummer Mick Reed and brought in vocalist/bassist Rio Goldhammer. Since then, they’ve released new albums (Bloodline, Futurecide, Citizens of Nowhere) and toured across Europe and beyond.

Sadly, Mark passed away in 2017, but the band have kept his spirit alive with guitarist Sam Evans stepping in, joined more recently by bassist Simon “Ding” Archer (The Fall, PJ Harvey, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry & Imperial Wax).

💀 Why they matter: 1919’s sound blends pounding drums, driving bass, sharp guitars and dark, atmospheric vocals – the perfect mix of energy and mood that makes goth/post-punk so timeless. They were there at the start, and they’re still here making noise today.
