Defence spending 1950 to 2020 dropped from 10% to 2% of GDP.
Growth from 1945 to 2007 averaged 2.5%

Increasing defence to 3% will cost c. £15-16 Billion.

1948 life expectancy was < 66. Today it's 79, 83 for women. Over 65s were 11% in 1948, now 19%. By 2055, we'll need £140 Billion more.

1940s: NHS just provided antibiotics & emergency procedures.

The Economy: The Great Gordon, Covid & The Ukraine War. Bailing out the banks cost £100s of Billions. Ukraine/energy energy cap cost £100B. From 1980s debt was < 40%. After 2007, it rose to 80%, then 85% after Covid. Currently 96%. UK's debt interest is £105B, CF defence budget of £57B. Growth, & wages, has been flat since 2007.

Benefits: Pippa gets £550/month on top of p/t wages of £12k/yr. Health related benefits have gone up from £37B to £55B since Covid. Welfare for < 65 gone from 2% in 1940s to 4%.

Under Truss, the pension system was about to collapse, so borrowing more is out. Taxing high earners will cut the receipts, so must tax the middle. But increasing taxes beyond the current rate is anti-growth. Total welfare spending 2025/26 was £327B.

Waste: NHS productivity still < b4 Covid. Unprotected departments, i.e. not health, education, defence, have cut spending by 20% eg local govt. Justice: Crown Court backlog of 75,000 cases.
