Chambers is delighted to welcome Mehreen Kazmi as our new pupil as she begins her journey at the Bar.

Over the next six months, Mehreen will be shadowing members of both our Family and Civil teams, gaining invaluable insight and experience across a broad range of practice areas. She will then commence her second six, during which she will be “on her feet,” accepting instructions and representing clients in her own right.

Please join us in welcoming Mehreen to 2 New Street Chambers.

As many of you may know, Sarah Cornish of Chambers is preparing to embark on the adventure of a lifetime as she takes part in the Clipper 2025-26 Round the World Yacht Race.

On 31st August, ten 70ft ocean racing yachts will set sail from Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth, beginning an extraordinary 40,000-nautical-mile odyssey that spans six continents and eight epic legs. This unique race brings together professional sailors and novices as crews drawn from 50 nationalities worldwide, to take on some of the most challenging and unpredictable waters on the planet.

Sarah’s journey will begin on 21st December 2025 when she joins the crew onboard the yacht sponsored by London Business School, in Fremantle, Western Australia. From there she and the crew will sail South to the southern coastline of Australia, battling the roaring forties in the Southern Ocean, South of Tasmania before turning North, against the East Australian Current up into the Great Barrier Reef and conclude on 11th January 2026 at Airlie Beach in the Whitsunday Islands. Sarah’s journey will include 21 days of consecutive non-stop racing on Leg 4 of the Australian Coast-to-Coast Challenge, a 3,400-mile passage from Western Australia to Eastern Australia. Over the course, Sarah and her 15 crew mates will face everything from towering ocean swells to intense tropical squalls, navigating conditions that will vary between a blazing 30°C to a near-freezing 5°C.

Remarkably, Sarah was a sailing novice just five months ago. Since then, she has undertaken rigorous, and at times extreme, training, demonstrating extraordinary commitment and determination to earn her place on the crew for this once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

The Clipper Race proudly partners with UNICEF, and over its 25-year history, the race has raised vital funds to support children across the world. Sarah’s personal goal is to raise £1,500. If you feel able to, donations can be made here: https://tinyurl.com/jh9wreny. Every donation, big or small, will help make a difference.”

It’s always a great celebration of the achievements of not only the local legal community, but in particular those of the newly qualified solicitors who have excelled in their profession. Hope to see you all there tomorrow.

The reduction in legal aid has, predictably, led to more families appearing in court without legal representation. Without the appropriate understanding of what constitutes a fair and reasonable settlement more and more cases are proceeding to final hearings, rather than being resolved through negotiation or mediation. The stark result: 4,000 children involved in cases lasting over two years!

National Audit Office's latest report delivers a sobering assessment of a system struggling to meet the needs of vulnerable children and families.

Last night, Senior Clerk Ben, had the pleasure of speaking to students from De Montfort University Leicester (DMU)'s School of Humanities and Performing Arts about his journey to becoming a Clerk, and life in Chambers. This was done alongside 3 other speakers with inspirational journeys, Stacey Wragg Iain McKenzie and David Nathan.

It was a great evening that will hopefully have provided assistance to those students moving into the wider world. Thank you to Louise Peacock and Sarah Thomson for the opportunity.
