Flood locker scheme now open for applications across Charnwood

Towns and villages in Charnwood are now able to apply for funding to install flood lockers, as Charnwood Borough Council officially opens its £150,000 flood resilience scheme.

The funding is available to Town and Parish Councils across the borough and community groups in Loughborough, and can be used to purchase flood lockers containing equipment such as aqua snakes, signage, and other tools to help protect properties from flooding.

Over the past three years, several areas in Charnwood have been severely affected by flooding due to heavy rainfall, with hundreds of households and businesses suffering internal damage.

Cllr Beverley Gray, the Council’s lead member for climate action and net zero, said: “We are pleased to open applications for this vital scheme. Flooding has had a devastating impact on communities in Charnwood, and this funding will help local areas prepare and respond more effectively.

“We are committed to supporting residents and working with partners to build resilience.”

Town and Parish Councils can apply for up to £10,000 to purchase a flood locker and equipment. Loughborough has been allocated £30,000 due to its high flood risk, and local community groups in the town are also eligible to apply.

Only areas that have been recently affected by flooding will be eligible for the funding. The lockers will be accessible to trained individuals, including flood wardens, who will be provided with a key or combination lock to distribute the equipment when needed.

The application process is now live and can be accessed via the Council’s website: www.charnwood.gov.uk/floodlockers

Earlier this year, around 300 properties and businesses in Charnwood were internally flooded, with a further 250 affected in 2024.

The Council’s website has a section dedicated to information and advice regarding flooding. Visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/flooding

🚜 £3 MILLION POUNDS OF RECOVERIES 🚜

Yesterday, our rural team recovered a stolen road roller – and while it may seem like just another job, it actually marks something incredibly significant.

With this recovery, the team has now returned over £3 million worth of rural property back to our communities.

We’ve recorded every single item that we’ve recovered over the years.

From tractors to tools, trailers to heavy machinery, every item recovered makes a real difference to the farmers and rural businesses who rely on them.

👏 Huge thanks to the dedication, teamwork, and vigilance of our officers, and to the community for continuing to report concerns and share information.

Together, we’re keeping rural Leicestershire safe. 🌾💪
