Bangladesh head coach Thomas Dooley’s recent comments have drawn heavy criticism on social media. Before travelling to Indonesia, he spoke in a press conference about Farhan Ali Wahid’s ability to adapt to the weather in Bangladesh and Southeast Asia. Beyond that, he mainly highlighted Farhan’s finishing ability, which is a perfectly reasonable observation.
I often disagree with comments from the Bangladesh Football Federation and the coaching staff, but I find nothing wrong with this particular remark. The coach was not talking about long-term climate change. He was addressing the immediate practical challenge of adapting to heat and humidity. Any coach in his position would think along similar lines.
From the matches I have seen, Farhan looks genuinely talented. Players like Hamza Choudhury and Shome have settled quickly into the national team and the regional climate because they are excellent footballers with experience at a high level in Europe and America. Farhan’s standout quality is his finishing. That was clear even in the Fulham under-21 side, and it is still evident at Boreham Wood. I am confident he will play for the national team.
But does weather actually affect footballers? And how difficult might this be for Farhan?
Farhan is a professional. He will want to adapt to the team and to the conditions. Yet every player has limits, and yes, weather does influence performance. Two factors matter most here:
The first is a fixed geographic effect. This has nothing to do with changing weather and everything to do with a country’s location. Bolivia is the clearest example. When Brazil or Argentina travel there, they often struggle badly and sometimes lose. The reason is altitude and the resulting lack of oxygen. England faced similar concerns about their matches in Mexico during the 2026 World Cup cycle for the same reason. Location can shape a team’s performance in a real and measurable way.
The second factor is tropical or hot-weather climate, the normal regional conditions of a place. The main challenge comes when players arrive from cooler environments. Bangladesh, parts of the Middle East, and Indonesia all fall into this category. When players move from colder climates into these conditions, their bodies can struggle at first to regulate temperature. The risk of dehydration rises, heart rate climbs more quickly, recovery after sprints slows, and decision-making can suffer. This is the real concern with Farhan. We have seen similar situations in recent World Cups in Brazil and Qatar. European players usually need seven to fourteen days of conditioning when they travel to such environments. Neither the Bangladesh team nor Farhan has that much time before the FIFA ASEAN Cup begins.
Weather is not a minor footnote in football. In difficult conditions it can turn a player capable of dominating for ninety minutes into a limited “impact” substitute, and that can hurt a team. Farhan is only nineteen. He is already playing regular senior football and looks physically gifted, with exceptional finishing skill on top of that. Younger players often adapt faster than older ones.
I wish Farhan Ali Wahid every success.
