Ashby Statutes: Funfairs, Churros, and High Octane Thrills!
What an afternoon at the iconic Ashby Statutes! For anyone who isn't familiar with this local legend, the Statutes funfair has been taking over the heart of Ashby-de-la-Zouch every September for hundreds of years. Dating back to 1219, when King Henry III granted a royal charter for an annual market, this historical tradition evolved from an ancient hiring fair into the massive, high-energy street carnival we know and love today. Taking over Market Street and Brook Street, it remains one of the largest and longest-running street fairs in the entire region, pulling in families and thrill-seekers year after year.
A massive shoutout to the absolute legend Gemma Smith, my top-tier co-pilot and resident best freind—for driving me and the little man out for the afternoon. Honestly, without Gemma making the trip possible, I would’ve missed out on my very first time experiencing the Statutes magic! Ashby should be properly proud of what they pull off every single season. The streets were buzzing with energy, non-stop laughter, families out in full force, and the kind of vibrant community atmosphere that reminds you why local tradition matters.
Naturally, we didn't just walk through—we captured
everything. From every heart-pounding ride dominating the high street to a very important, highly scientific tasting session featuring crispy, warm churros.
