BLACKPOOL TOWER IS A GUN

You pull up your jacket along the promenade, where the old white paint peels and cracks in filo layers. A nippy cold snap and you’ve been found unprepared. If only there were a garment to wrap across your nape. You look upward, and see the red rust and salt on the North West’s giant, aching bones of steel and cast iron. You hear them, don’t you? The signals. There are messages in every bulb of Blackpool Illuminations. They’re telling you to buy this scarf.

“IS THIS WHAT YOU WANTED?!”

Our gluttonous society is always asking for more. Why don’t you cover this? Why don’t you cover that? To capitulate and enfuriate, we present to you the next logical step in MORE MORE MORE – something mental, something silly: a beautiful, buldging bumper issue. So full of culture were we, that it all could simply not be contained in a regular printed offering. No, we had to release two issues at once.

Issue 16/17 has got a bit of everything. Bl****bs in Berghain. Black pudding throwing competitions. Rebellions. An aeroplane made in a garden. A man living in a loft. Corporate espionage and karaoke. Stone skimming societies and foul-mouthed market stalls. Plus, reviews on music, literature, and even a flipping videogame, if you can believe it.

So, lo and behold! This orange dossier of North West culture. Goodbye 2025, you’ve really been rotten.

Contents include: The Man Who Built an Aeroplane; Lem; Blood, Sweat & Black Pudding; The Life and Times of a Bickershaw Park Ranger; Blow Jobs, Bust-ups & Berghain; Who Were The Economic League?; The Scouse Stone Skimmers of Sefton Park; The Indigent; An Assessment of the Arts Fair; A Stopfordian Sing-Song; The Foul-Mouthed Clickbait of Clitheroe Fu***ng Market. PLUS reviews of music, film, literature and video games.

Featuring work by: Edie Barnabas, Olivia Bernstein, Tom Branfoot, Davey Brett, Becky Brookfield, Joseph Conway, Mark Cunliffe, Rhys Delany, Sue Denim, Sam Fairbrother, Hayley Flynn, Cath Garvey, Dex Chait Grodner, Ted Richards, Hayley Scott, Connor Seed, Georgina Tyson, Phoebe Verity, Kayla Victoria.

TWO BIRDS W/ ONE STONE! 🐦↖️

In typical STAT fashion, we put on two BIRD events right next to each other with limited mental capacity. But you lot turned out in droves so we can only thank thank thank you for your murmurations.

BIRD I

On the 14th we said GOODBYE to our comrades at as they revealed their final issue in SALFORD ().We made a bird-sized coffin, we sung Daniel Johnston. Flowers were repurposed from the Howe Bridge crematory skip. and blew away the tears, along with the roof. Oh and we launched our double issue, too.

BIRD II

On the 19th we hosted a work-in-progress night in LEIGH called "Oh! My God, it's a Bird!" with our dearest .mcr. The evening featured with an interpretation of Jean Giradoux's play THE MADWOMAN OF CHAILLOT. Meanwhile, The Commission for New & Old Art debutéd THE PHOENIX & THE TURTLE for two horns, tape & electronics & yellow dress. And who could forget 's quadrophonic laptop smashing?

Moping is for the wrong ‘uns in winter. The brave choose romance and hurt feelings and wet pillows.
Turn right and kiss the stranger next to you. Go back and kiss them again. Look up and see the sky is full of robins and turtle doves and partridges in couples by the millions.

Mad birds are too easily ignored. Too poorly lit.
Shadows and quiet corners are for the dull and belligerent. Don’t light a fu***ng candle in the darkness. Plug in your plastic tree and fall in love.

GRASSROOTS: Inside the World’s Only Lawnmower Museum

words by Kyle MacNeill [.macneill]

Brian Radam’s one-of-a-kind Southport museum is home to a celeb smorgasboard of lawn tools.

“Lumbering through the turnstile, I’m faced by several hundred mean, green, grass-cutting machines. It’s like being inside a Homebase with plaques instead of prices. There are 200 on show and around 2000 more in storage.”

SECULAR EXORCISM A3 RISO PRINT

“Pulling chains from the wet clay heart of the North, we achieved something beautiful that night: the promise of a new culture.”

Commemorate our Secular Exorcism of the North of England with this two-colour A3 Risograph print. No two are exactly the same due to the unique process of Risograph printing.

A Secular Exorcism of the North of England was an evening of noise, drone, ritual and performance held on Saturday 11th October 2025 at Hulme Community Garden Centre as part of The World Transformed festival.

The performance featured: Tessa Pike (saxophone), George Francis Lee (harmonium, guitar, vocals, pre-recorded music), Connor Seed (performance, spoken word, film), Pete Mercer (spoken word) and Phoebe Verity (concept support).

We’re once again asking for your tales, tribulations and takes. PITCH US, WE PAY.

Did you find something weird in Blackburn?
Do you know a secret about the M6 motorway?
Does Bolton appear in your nightmares?

If a THING happened in a TOWN, and it was in the NORTH WEST, we probably want to hear about it.

FAQs

1. How do I pitch?

[email protected]

We have a full pitching guide up on our websh*te. Please do give that a read so neither of us are disappointed. Don’t send us a DM on here because we’ll probably lose track of it. We’re only human.

2. How much do we pay?

Not as much as we’d like. £50 for a piece over 500 words, £25 for under. We are an anti-profit affair and our team work voluntarily so we can pay our contributors, we’re always looking to up our fees as high as we can make them, because writers and artists deserve a fair wage. We can cover expenses, event tickets and travel as negotiated, too.

3. Can I write about Manchester?

Absolutely not. Don’t you know who you’re dealing with.

The Roma Nation of Bolton
words by James Varney []

Romani dance troupe are teaching a new generation the art of a good Bolton bop.

“You can create that Roma space, not just by the language, but also by dance, by the way you make food, the way you serve food, the way you eat, the way you conversate, the way you sit, the way you stand, the way you keep eye contact. We’ve got lots of ways, the Romani ways, and there is a word for that, it’s Romanipe. And when you do these ways, that’s what constitutes the Roma nation.”

FAC OFF: Stop Kissing the Haçienda’s Arse

by Thomas Steeles
[]

A spectre is haunting the North West – the spectre of the Haçienda. It’s time we got up and beat our nostalgia-drenched hangover.

“Ironically, in mourning this long-dead club, we’re an embarrassment to the explicitly political ends it was built to serve. Our nostalgia has stagnated culture. As Gen-Zs now breaching our mid-twenties, we’re sold the idea that the Haçienda was the best it’s going to get, that nothing of the sort could ever happen again – we’re paralysed by the ghosts of culture past.”
