“A picture’s worth a thousand words” is a much used quote among photographers. When the creation of an image has a positive, lasting impact and shines a light on real constructive change, the story is absolutely worth telling.

Mathieu van der Poel 🍾

A bucket list location to watch cycling has always been the Kwaremont, on Ronde Day, and let’s face it, Mathieu Van der Poel is 👑 of the

With my little Olympus 35 EC2 and a roll of black and white, Ilford HP5 film, we sat all day watching the racing unfold. For one lap I pushed to the front of the crowd, knowing that the limitations of the camera might just be exposed (close focus, auto exposure in poor light), but prepared to take a chance, because that’s what shooting on vintage film cameras is all about.
I managed to barge enough space to pan across with the riders and knew the background would work beautifully for me. Mathieu being all alone made the perfect subject and thankfully, this wonderful, old, outdated camera did the rest.
Opening up my scanned frames is always a nervous moment, there’s always risks compared to shooting digital, but this is all the reward I need!

Thanks to everyone who liked and commented on the story preview, thought you deserved to see the shot properly 👍

Half the mystery is you don’t know what settings the camera used, within its range, probably f2.8 at about 1/50 sec, ISO400 HP5+ film.

Can’t recommend Analogue Wonderland enough for their great service.

So how would a 70’s era point and shoot, with limited control, cope under the lights of a Leicester Riders game?

Producing some great motion blur, sharp contrast and deep black shadows, thanks to the combination of the and
