Our very own School Farm Studios engineer Stefano Civetta , managed to escape from the microphone locker at the weekend, to take part in a panel talk at GearFest UK held at London’s Tileyard studio complex in conjunction with Sound On Sound Magazine.
The talk was co-hosted by our good friends at Present Day Production (who were also exhibiting their excellent MUM studio monitors) and spoke of the importance of getting things right at source when recording. Mark from Present Day Production said of the event:
“I’ve been mastering music for over 25 years, and the mixes I receive usually fall into two camps - the professional and the unprofessional! And a bad mix is almost always due to failures earlier in the production process. The song and arrangement might be bad, or instrumentation, microphone choices and positioning might leave a lot to be desired, and people often try and fix those issues in the mix. But whenever I receive multitracks from Stefano, all I have to do is push the faders up, do a bit of panning, and it sounds incredible. Likewise, a full mix for mastering rarely needs anything doing to it at all. So, as we had a talking spot on the main stage at GearFest lined up, I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to invite Stefano down to share his knowledge with the world! And sure enough, he kept the audience engaged and entertained for the full hour with his incredible ability to share his experience with passion, flair, and wonderful humour! We were swamped with people when we left the stage, too!”
Present Day Production also published a video on their YouTube channel to accompany the event, again featuring Stefano, so be sure to check that out here:
