The next phase of the global circular economy is taking shape—and Europe and China are pursuing markedly different approaches.
As the European Commission prepares its new Circular Economy Act, China is already implementing circular economy priorities through its latest Five-Year Plan. This feature examines the policy ambitions, investment requirements and manufacturing strategies that could determine which region moves fastest toward a truly circular industrial economy.
For the leather sector, the discussion goes beyond regulation. It raises important questions about resource efficiency, investment, product longevity and the recognition of leather as one of the most circular materials available.

LHCA explores better connections to Mexico

The Leather and Hide Council of America (LHCA) recently led a first formal trade mission to Mexico.

Working with Mexican tanning sector body Cámara de la Industria de Curtiduría del Estado de Guanajuato (CICUR) , it set up meetings in Monterrey between seven US packer and processor executives with 11 buyers from Mexican manufacturing companies.

LHCA said Mexico currently accounts for between 10% and 15% of annual US hide exports, but added that trading partners on both sides of the border see this as “well below potential”, given their geographic proximity and shared supply-chain infrastructure.

And on the subject of supply-chain infrastructure, the delegation also held discussions with Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) rail executives to explore possibilities for increasing the use of rail freight in the trade flows between the hide and leather sector in Mexico and the US.

CPKC’s network includes single-line rail connections running from Canada, through the US and into Mexico.
