🔥 BIG NEWS: OpenAI just dropped a browser! Meet ChatGPT Atlas. 🔥
Forget adding AI to your current browser - OpenAI just launched Atlas, a brand-new web browser built from the ground up with ChatGPT integrated everywhere.
It launched on October 21st, and it's a huge shift in how we use the internet. I've been testing it, and here's the breakdown of what this actually means for your browsing:
🧠 The Core Idea:
Stop Switching Tabs - Atlas puts a ChatGPT sidebar on every page you visit. It can see the content you're viewing, so you can ask for a summary, compare it to another tab, or find key dates—all without leaving the page. It's like having a smart research assistant sitting right next to you.
✨ The Features That Matter.
The Live Sidebar (Free): This is the magic. Click the "Ask ChatGPT" button, and the sidebar pops up, ready to interact with the current page. Ask it to: Summarize a long article instantly. Find better prices while you shop. Compare what you're reading to another open tab. Ask complex questions about the content.
Agent Mode (Plus/Pro): This is the wild part. Tell ChatGPT, "Order my groceries," and it will open the site, add items to your cart, and fill out the delivery info. It works for booking restaurants, filling out long forms, and simple purchasing (with your final permission, of course!).
Browser Memories (Optional): Atlas can remember what you've browsed (if you allow it). Researching vacuum cleaners yesterday? Ask: "Which one was best for pets?" It remembers the context. Your Privacy is key: You control and can delete memories anytime. OpenAI does NOT train its models on your browsing data.
💰 What It Costs (And Who Gets What)
Atlas is built on the same foundation as Chrome (Chromium) and is currently available for macOS. Windows, iOS, and Android are coming soon!
Free: Full browser experience + the game-changing ChatGPT sidebar on every page. (No Agent Mode, limited ChatGPT power)
Plus ($20/mo): Everything in Free + Agent Mode + Better AI (GPT-4) + Faster responses.
💡 The Big Difference from Other BrowsersGoogle added AI to Chrome. OpenAI built a browser around AI. The result is an AI that feels integrated into the browsing experience, not just an add-on.
My quick take: The sidebar feature alone is a massive workflow improvement for research and information gathering. Agent Mode is promising but still in preview - stick to simple tasks for now!
What's the first thing you'd ask the sidebar to do? 👇
