A dedicated bilingual student is preparing to take the next steps in her academic journey after an “exceptional time” at college.

Nimue Thomas, 18, a former pupil at Ysgol Dinas Brân, has received an offer to study Classical Civilisation at Durham University – one of the UK’s leading institutions – after completing A Levels in English Literature, History, Classical Civilisation, and the Level 3 Welsh Baccalaureate.

Reflecting on her time at Coleg Cambria Yale in Wrexham, Nimue, from Llangollen, said: “These past two years have been absolutely brilliant.

“From my very first day, I felt welcomed and supported, the teachers are fantastic, and their passion for their subjects made learning enjoyable and inspiring. I’ve loved every minute and would do it all again if I could.”

A student-athlete is on track to achieve a remarkable milestone after securing a full scholarship to study and compete in the United States.

Lilly Noble, an A Level learner at Coleg Cambria Deeside, has been awarded a 100% scholarship to attend Murray State University in Kentucky.

There, she will study Physiotherapy while competing for the University’s prestigious track and field team.

The 17 year-old, who completed A Levels in Physical Education, Psychology, and Biology at Deeside Sixth Form Centre, was scouted shortly after turning 16 by Onfield, a specialist sports recruitment agency.

Following a series of calls and interviews with American universities, the former Flint High School pupil chose Murray State for its academic and athletic offerings, as well as the opportunity to progress both her sporting and professional ambitions.

“My ultimate goal is to compete professionally in athletics, with dreams of taking part in the Commonwealth Games and, one day, the Olympic Games,” Lilly said.

A new lifeline for those struggling with drug and alcohol addiction has been launched in memory of much-loved drag star and TV personality, The Vivienne.

House of The Vivienne is described as a “safe, inclusive space” offering free, confidential advice, guidance, and compassionate listening every Tuesday at Ty Enfys (Rainbow House) in Colwyn Bay.

The group is led by Chanel Williams, sister of the late James Lee Williams — better known to millions as The Vivienne — and her family, and has been created to honour James’s life and their courage in speaking about their own struggles, and their unwavering belief in helping others.

The first-ever winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, James died in January this year at the age of 32, following a cardiac arrest caused by the effects of taking ketamine.

It was a devastating loss for family, friends, and the LGBTQ+ community, and one that Chanel is determined will help spark awareness and change.

An award-winning start-up is making waves in the marine sector.

Ecodetect, based at M-SParc in Gaerwen, Anglesey, is celebrating its first anniversary, marking a year of impressive milestones and global recognition in the clean technology arena.

Founded by Dr David Gold, a former geologist and oil and gas professional turned environmental entrepreneur, the company develops AI-powered automated wildlife detection systems for marine renewable energy developers.

These systems help safeguard marine life while cutting down the time and cost required for monitoring and permitting.

Reflecting on the company’s journey, David, originally from Hertford and now living in Denbighshire, said: “Starting Ecodetect was a leap, but the right one.

“It came at a pivotal moment in my life - the birth of my son – and what we are doing here isn’t just for business; it’s for his future, and for future generations.”

Teenager Toby Sutcliffe is making serious waves in the world of canoe slalom - and his school is behind him every stroke of the way.

The 15 year-old from Llanberis, a pupil at St Gerard's School Trust in Bangor, is currently ranked among the top five C1 slalom athletes in the UK for his age group.

A dedicated year-round paddler, Toby trains on Llyn Padarn and at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham and has competed in the Junior Slalom European Cup in France and Germany as part of the Welsh Performance Team.

He joined St Gerard’s aged seven and is about to start Year 11. Balancing elite sport with his GCSE studies, Toby says the school has played a key role in helping him chase his goals.

“My ultimate aim is to reach the highest national division, then Team GB,” said Toby said.

“I’d love to make it to the World Championships or the Olympics one day."

From Flint to the frontlines of UK politics, a former Coleg Cambria student has taken on a leading role at a respected London-based think tank.

Matthew Barnes, now based in the capital, began his academic journey at Deeside Sixth Form Centre, where he studied A Levels in Government and Politics, Media Studies, English Language, and the Welsh Baccalaureate.

Now 23, Matthew has gone from strength to strength, recently completing a Master’s degree in Broadcast Journalism at the The University of Sheffield, where he also earned a BA in International Relations and Politics.

His academic excellence was recognised with the prestigious Dan Walker Journalism Scholarship and the award for Best Overall Performance in his postgraduate programme.

Currently working as a media and communications officer, Matthew’s journey into the political sphere began during his time at Coleg Cambria—a period he describes as instrumental in shaping his future.

“My time at Cambria was fantastic,” he said.

“From day one, I was treated like an adult and supported by brilliant tutors who encouraged me to push myself."

LAUNCH: Borehole geophysics technology leader Robertson Geo has officially opened its new headquarters, bringing all UK operations under one roof and marking a major step in the company’s continued expansion.

The move to Tre Morfa Enterprise Park in Conwy from sites in Deganwy and Llandudno follows sustained growth for the award-winning business, which serves customers in more than 160 countries and operates from additional bases in the US and Hong Kong.

The new 20,500 square-foot facility features a purpose-built manufacturing facility, modern offices, a training hub, and a world-class calibration centre that will serve as a standard-setter for the markets they support — including the renewables, geotechnical, offshore wind, mining, energy, and environmental sectors.

The interior has Japanese and Welsh influences including Bonsai trees, slate from local quarries, a Kaizen ‘ideas wall’ and bespoke, tailored details marrying industry and contemporary design.

The firm plans to expand further within the park to accommodate its growing Robertson Geo Services team.

Speaking at the launch, Managing Director Simon Garantini welcomed guests and thanked partners and staff: “It’s emotional leaving our previous premises after more than 45 years, but this move marks the start of an exciting new chapter.

“The new headquarters gives us the space and facilities to realise our ambitions, collaborate more effectively, and continue innovating at the forefront of our industry.

“Our team has grown, international demand is increasing — especially in the US and Asia — and we’re now well-positioned to steadily double both our headcount and sales revenue.”

Guests at the event included Cllr Emily Owen, Deputy Leader of Conwy County Council, Bangor Aberconwy MP Claire Hughes MP, and senior representatives from OYO Corporation of Japan, Robertson Geo’s majority shareholder.
