Sweet Dreams & Dancing Queens: Vibing with Shan Hua's experimental mockumentary "Like a Loquat With its Tendons Severed"...

Sweet Dreams & Dancing Queens: Vibing with Shan Hua's experimental mockumentary "Like a Loquat With its Tendons Severed", and animated shadow/spectre/virtual figure "You Asked About the Cat Wearin' My Scarf", at Sarabande. A multi-hyphenate, motion capture, live action, animation narrative mashup from Shakespeare's Lady Macbeth, Virginia Woolf's "Orlando", Feng Qingyang from "Swordsman", the fox spirit from "Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio (Liaozhai)", and the female historian from "Possession". Monologuery at its most diasporic, traumatic, and psycho-contemporary.

Pradascape: Prada Mode London animated Town Hall during Frieze, with a programme exploring notions of spectatorship. At its core: "The Audience", Elmgreen & Dragset's immersive installation, presented in the form of a cinema. A looped film. Sculptural figures seated in still observation. "The Conversation" extended the narrative beyond the screen - a solitary figure at a café table, connected through a video call, both present and elsewhere.

Talks featured Elmgreen & Dragset and High Line architect Elizabeth Diller, a lecture by scholar Kirsty Sedgman, spoken poetry by James Massiah, highly insightful scriptwriting - and performance (please make yourself known to us) - sessions led by Ray Grewal, and film screenings of Leos Carax, Quentin Duplex and Tsai Ming-Liang, among the many highlights. Haunting, desirable, memorable, presence/absence, Pradatropian ways of seeing. (NB: October marks the 20th anniversary of the iconoclastic permanent public artwork also by Elmgreen & Dragset).

Getting to Nohana: Sayama, that is, at the Graduate Exhibition of the Affordable Art Fair. Although, we already knew of her cinematic dreamscapes from .art__gallery, and her graduate show at , along with the equally catchy work of Ngai Ning Yu and Gigi Tsim showing here too. In fact, the tightly curated platform by , is expansive and dynamic. Congrats also to Hattie Quigley, and who paints like cream cake, on winning the annual JM Finn Graduate Artist Award 2025. Mousetrap vs Click Bait: Ryan Gander’s battery operated animatronic mouse stars in ‘I’ve Fallen Foul of My Desire’ at Camden Arts Projects, London, UK, via Lisson Gallery. A monologue ‘mouseterpiece’ of wisdom delivered using the voice of the artist’s daughter and sharing perspectives on time, change, and humankind’s potential demise. "The artwork reminds us that we are in charge of our own destiny, our agency and our time—factors that are more important than the things that are dictated to us by society and tradition,” Gander notes. “The power is in your imagination, and you have the power to change your perception.” Moment. Pause for ’thawt’ and all manner of quantumplation at Frieze London.

Aesthetic Delirium: Lévy Gorvy Dayan pairs Leonor Fini (first show in London since 1967) with contemporary Polish artist Aleksandra Waliszewska in "La mort de l’amour" and includes Stanislao Lepri (one of Fini’s two great loves) in "Ménage à trois". A glorious, giddy, high-fantastical hovering of ritualistic Renaissance, Mannerist and Surreal nudes, wanderers, dreamers, felines, cadavers, creatures, apparitions, visions and sorcerinas. Lévytation at its finest, fairest and foulest. Love it to death.

To a T: Tennis star Eva Lys has spent the last year on tour taking pictures of her favourite surfaces to play on. “New cities. New colours. Same obsession,” she writes on her Insta, and calls her striking visual assemblage Courts of the World. Chapter ll „T”.

And much as we love American artist Jonas Wood’s series of 24 tennis-court paintings shown several years ago at Gagosian and now residing at LACMA,
we think Eva’s holding court and playing to the gallery with this vibe-y-est volley of matchy-matchy geometry. Advantage Lys. 💫

Talking Heads: One week left to see The Herbert Smith Freehills Portrait Award 2025 at London's National Portrait Gallery. Moira Cameron, Tim Benson and Martyn Harris were 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively, while Michelle Liu won the Young Artist Award. Of particular note we also loved Brenda Zlamany, Pippa Hale-Lynch, Xu Yang, Roxana Hall, and Thomas Arthurton’s snazzy pink trainers. (Until October 12)

NPG will soon be taking entries for next year’s HSFPA 2026 (June 25 - October 7, 2026). Anyone over 18 can apply.
