June 12 is celebrated as Democracy Day in Nigeria, commemorating the annulled presidential election of June 12, 1993, which was won by MKO Abiola. The election was considered one of the freest and fairest in Nigeria's history.

The annulment of the election led to widespread protests and marked a significant turning point in Nigeria's struggle for democracy. In 2018, the Nigerian government officially declared June 12 as Democracy Day to honor the sacrifices made by Nigerians in the fight for democracy.

Today, June 12 serves as a reminder of the importance of democratic principles, the power of the people's voice, and the ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria's democratic institutions.
