A 911 dispatcher has apologized after responding to a mother's plea for help with an unruly child by saying: "OK. Do you want us to come over to shoot her?"

After dispatcher Mike Forbess' comment, the line went dead for 5 seconds.

"Are you there?" Forbess asked.

"Excuse me?" Lori said.

On September 29, 2025, a white kindergarten teacher at Floral Avenue Elementary School in Bartow, Florida, led students in a modified Happy Birthday song for 6-year-old Black student Legend Whitaker, including lines about living in a zoo and looking like a monkey. Legend's mother, Desarae Prather, who received the video from the teacher, confronted school officials, describing the incident as racist and traumatizing for her son, the only Black child in the class. Polk County Public Schools placed the teacher on administrative leave and initiated an investigation for potential code of conduct violations.
