With this chapter, we’ve reached the end of Part I of The Hobby. So far, our serialisation has followed DI John Custer and the new Pa******le Unit as they first encounter and investigate the Marchman Papers.

But The Hobby is a novel of six parts, and from here the story takes a sharp turn.

Part II steps back in time, into the world of child star Violet Trellis – who unwittingly becomes the excuse for the dark secrets Custer is now trying to uncover. We’ll be sharing a taste of this new section here on Substack, not chapter by chapter, but through a mix of selected extracts, background essays, and behind-the-scenes notes – enough to give you a sense of where the story is heading, without giving the whole book away.
