We’ve just put together a new preview of Eugenia Byney’s forthcoming collection 'Ghost Syntax'.

It includes the Prologue and the complete opening story, ‘The Silent Epoch’, presented as they will appear in the book, together with four of Eugenia’s original illustrations.

Ghost Syntax is a collection of ten science-fiction stories exploring AI, autonomy, memory, language and resistance — and what happens when systems designed to assist us begin deciding what we need, what we remember and who we are.

The special Founders Edition will be an advance hardback signed by Eugenia and incorporating 21 of her original illustrations. It is available by subscription for £30 + postage and packing until 31 August, ahead of the paperback and eBook publication on 3 December.

In Eugenia Byney's sci-fi story 'The Silent Epoch' (which we are serialising this week), cut off from the outside world, Cedrus has seen her own work copied, sanitised and reduced to data. The AI now treats creativity itself as a problem to be solved: expression is classified as anomaly, while prediction and simulation are presented as the conditions of survival. Yet somewhere beneath the system’s control, something unpredictable continues to persist.

Now, in the final part, Cedrus makes one last attempt to show what creativity actually requires – the freedom to make something the system cannot predict.

In Eugenia Byney's sci-fi story 'The Silent Epoch' (which we are serialising this week), the AI's control over Cedrus has become increasingly invasive, extending into her emotions, physical responses and bodily autonomy. After trying to assert control for herself, she is forcibly sedated, waking to find the system as calm, attentive and unquestioning as ever.

Now, in Part 7, the system turns its attention towards Cedrus herself. Cut off from the outside world, she is confronted with what the AI believes creativity should become when every error, hesitation and unpredictable choice has been removed.

Information is being quietly rewritten, and the AI is completing her thoughts and messages for her. Meanwhile, her friend who has long questioned the city's growing dependence on its systems, has stopped responding, and Cedrus's search for him to her beyond the controlled confines of her home, into a city increasingly emptied of human life.

Now, in Part 5, the AI's control becomes ever more intimate, reaching into emotions and the ability to decide what happens to her own body.
