The US has threatened strong sanctions against the International Criminal Court unless it drops cases linked to Donald Trump and Israel.

Washington is demanding changes to the Rome Statute to stop the ICC from ever investigating President Donald Trump or senior US officials.

The US also wants the court to drop its Gaza investigations involving Israeli leaders, including arrest warrants issued last year for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

US officials say the ICC violates American sovereignty and warn that sanctions could follow if the court refuses to comply.

Ghana has arrested 32 Nigerian nationals in a major cybercrime crackdown targeting romance scams near Accra.

Ghana’s Cyber Security Authority, working with National Security operatives, arrested the suspects at a suspected cybercrime hub in Tuba, in the Greater Accra Region.

During the operation, officers seized 31 laptops and 15 mobile phones, which are now undergoing forensic analysis.

Authorities say the arrests are part of wider efforts to break cybercrime networks and protect Ghana’s digital space, with strong government backing.

Lawyer Basita Michael questions government priorities, saying “Funds for festivals. No funds for school subsidies. Education: ‘A top priority’.”

Renowned lawyer, Basita Michael questioned government spending priorities, pointing out the contrast between funding for festivals and the lack of school subsidies.

The post has reopened public debate on whether education is truly being treated as a top national priority.

In a formal letter dated December 8, 2025, SLTU reminded the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education that payment of fees subsidies was part of the agreement after the last teachers’ strike.

The union said, “It is disturbing that the 1st term fees subsidies have still not been paid in spite of assurances from your Ministry and the Ministry of Finance.”

SLTU warned that with schools closing soon for Christmas, the delay could lead to another backlog and urged urgent government intervention.

Dangote Refinery has received another crude oil shipment from Ghana as it adjusts supplies amid lower imports from Europe.

The refinery took delivery of Ghana’s Sankofa crude, marking its second shipment from the country as it shifts toward more West African oil.

Between September and November, crude supply averaged about 380,000 barrels per day, a drop blamed on maintenance work and temporary shutdowns.

Nigeria has started repaying its ₦4tn power sector debt with a new ₦590bn bond backed by a full government guarantee.

The Federal Government approved ₦300bn in cash and ₦290bn in non-cash instruments for electricity generation companies as part of the repayment plan.

ECOWAS to Scrap Air Transport Taxes, Reduce Passenger Fees by 25% from January 2026

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will eliminate air transport taxes and reduce passenger-related fees by 25% across all member states starting 1 January 2026

This will lower the cost of air travel between ECOWAS countries and boost passenger mobility.

It will also make intra-regional travel more affordable for millions of citizens.

All 15 member states are required to abolish existing air transport taxes and apply a uniform 25% reduction on passenger service and security fees at airports.

Dr. Samura Kamara says the sudden death of UTB’s CEO followed by the bank’s swift resolution “should raise eyebrows,” warning that UTB’s legacy and identity must not be erased.

Samura Kamara reacted to Union Trust Bank being placed in resolution, saying the timing — coming less than three months after the death of founder Dr. James Sanpha Koroma — is worrying for many Sierra Leoneans.

He argued that UTB’s strong national presence and identity should be protected, adding that the central bank could have explored alternatives like recapitalisation, restructuring, or early-warning risk assessments before taking this action.

Quoting journalist Thomas Dixon, he said “many see this move as a betrayal of the legacy of a Central Bank Governor,” warning that the takeover by Rokel Commercial Bank could have long-term effects on customers, staff and future indigenous investors.
