The way we speak to them when they mess up, when they're scared or when they try something new slowly becomes the way they'll speak to themselves for the rest of their lives. That's a big responsibility, but it's also a lovely opportunity, because every kind word and every "I believe in you" is helping shape the voice that will cheer them on when you're not there. We'll all slip up from time to time, but it's the overall tone that sticks with them!

It's easy to see their behaviour as the problem, but so much of it is them trying to connect with us when we're stretched thin and our heads are somewhere else. When we're overstimulated, even small requests for attention can feel like too much, yet that's exactly what helps them feel safe and seen. You don't have to get it right all the time, but a few moments of proper eye contact and full attention each day can mean the world to them!

This isn't about blaming ourselves, because most of us are juggling more than ever and doing our best with what we've got. But kids pick up on everything, from the stress we carry home to the phone that's always in our hand, and it often shows up in their behaviour. Sometimes the best thing we can do for them is slow down, put the distractions away and give them a little more of the calm, present version of us 🤍

When they're shouting, pushing you away or acting their absolute worst, every part of you wants to step back, but that's often when they're struggling the most inside. Their behaviour is a signal that they can't cope with what they're feeling, and what they really need is someone to stay close and not give up on them. It's tough to do in the moment, but leaning in when it's hardest is what shows them your love doesn't come with conditions.

The little hands, the way they used to say certain words, the cuddles that seemed to last forever... it all slips away so quietly you barely notice until it's gone. But then they surprise you with a joke you didn't see coming or a kindness you never taught them, and you realise how much you love who they're turning into. It's the strangest mix of heartache and pride, and nobody really prepares you for it 🤍

What’s the right age to give your child their first device? I hear this question all the time, so when I sat down with Dr Sumbul Desai, VP of Health & Fitness at Apple, I asked for her perspective.

And I really liked where the conversation went. Because maybe it’s less about finding the “perfect” age, and more about whether our child is ready, what they actually need the device for, and the boundaries we put around it from day one.

If you want to listen to the full conversation, check out the latest episode of my (link in bio), which is available on both Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

When they're overwhelmed, scared or just having one of those days, they don't need us to fix everything or tell them to calm down. They need someone to lean on until the storm passes, and a hug can say more than any words ever could. Being there for them like this is how they learn they're never facing the hard stuff alone!

The bedtimes, the screen time limits, the endless reminders to put their shoes on... most of it will fade over time. What stays with them is whether home felt safe, whether they felt listened to and whether they knew they were loved even on the tough days. Rules still matter, but it's the way we are with them that they'll carry for life!
