A Sea Fight with Barbary Corsair slave traders... 1681... Long before the Atlantic slave trade the coasts of Europe were being raided and millions of Europeans found their way to North African, Ottoman, and Middle Eastern slave markets.
Many actions were fought at this time in the Mediterranean between the British Straights Fleet and the Barbary Corsairs (mostly based at the Algiers). Both R. T. Jeffree and F.B. Cockett have proposed that this painting may show the action of 22 May 1681, when the Kingfisher was attacked by seven Barbary ships and her captain Sir John Kempthorne was killed; the Algerine boats were then flying Dutch and English Colours. Art: Dulwich Picture Gallery.
The Barbary slave trade went on until the end of the 19th Century. The slave trade of white Europeans both by Europeans and non Europeans went on for thousands of years but is largely ignored by a modern distortion of history focused solely on the Atlantic slave trade.
Long before the Atlantic slave trade the coasts of Europe were being raided and millions of Europeans found their way to North African, Ottoman, and Middle Eastern slave markets. In one such raid on the English plantation town of Baltimore, Ireland, in 1631, almost the entire town was taken into slavery by Barbary slave traders - this was before the Royal Navy became a major naval power in the second half of the 17th Century, and the coastline of the British Isles was still raided by slave traders.
The Arab slave trade began in the 7th century, shortly after the rise of Islam. Today, despite being officially outlawed, practices like the "kafala" system continue to perpetuate forced labour and human trafficking in these countries. Open slave markets in Libya have also been widely reported where migrants, particularly from sub-Saharan Africa, are auctioned off for labour, often under inhumane conditions. This practice has been linked to the lawlessness following the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, allowing human trafficking networks to thrive and exploit vulnerable individuals seeking a better life. This statement is not being anti-Islam or Arab, it's simply a statement of fact, whilst we hear constantly about how evil Europeans, Christians and our own history is, no one is adding any balanced reality, or facts into the debate, which is constantly supressed and never had.
