In this photo from 2010, Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is pictured on the Balmoral estate wearing the robes of the Order with the emerald version of the Vladimir Tiara and Queen Victoria’s Emerald Fringe Earrings. With these photos, I’ve included the star and sash badge of the order. This insignia was presented to King George V as a wedding present in 1893 from the people of Scotland.

Princess Diana had two different but similar pairs of earrings in this style. In this post we’re going to look at the unworn earrings. The earrings each have a cabochon sapphire in a cluster of 10 diamonds suspending a further cabochon sapphire in a cluster of 11 diamonds. Princess Diana began wearing the earrings shortly after her wedding leading me to think they may have been a wedding present. It’s said they were made from a sapphire and diamond watch, part of a larger suite of sapphire jewels given to her by The Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia but the sapphires in the watch are faceted while the sapphires in the earrings are cabochon, so this can’t be true. She wore this pair often throughout her life. They have not been seen since her death and it is unknown which of her sons inherited them. For comparison the last photo shows The Princess of Wales wearing the OTHER pair of earrings. You can see the earrings worn by The Princess of Wales have 8 diamonds around the top cluster and 9 around the bottom. Very similar but very different pairs of earrings.

The brooch is a geometric style piece made of citrine and diamonds by Cartier in the 1930’s. The brooch has a large central citrine in a cluster of citrines and diamonds, and is accented by further baguette and fancy cut citrines. The Queen Mother wore the brooch from the 1930’s-1950’s. It was first worn by the Queen Camilla shortly after she married The King.

When I post about Princess Margaret and her jewelry, the comments usually lament about the sale of her pieces in 2006, but despite the sale her children kept much of their mothers collection. One piece is this large pearl pendant now with her daughter Lady Sarah Chatto. The pearl pendant was originally owned by The Queen Mother who later gave it to Princess Margaret.

The story of the emerald choker begins in December 1911 when King George V and Queen Mary traveled to India for the Delhi Durbar. On December 9, the Maharani of Patiala and a committee on behalf of the Ladies of India presented her with a necklace and pendant of emeralds and rosettes of diamonds and a carved emerald brooch. Queen Mary personally wrote and released a thank you letter to the Ladies of India in which she said, “The jewel you have given me will ever be very precious in my eyes, and, whenever I wear it, though thousands of miles of land and sea separate us, my thoughts will fly to the homes of India, and create again and again this happy meeting and recall the tender love your hearts have yielded me. Your jewel shall pass to future generations as an imperial heirloom, and shall always stand as a token of the first meeting of an English Queen with the Ladies of India.” Queen Mary wore both jewels for the Delhi Durbar ceremony. In 1921 Queen Mary had Garrard alter the necklace into the modern Art Deco style. The cabochon emeralds alternate with diamond plaques, each with small emerald in the center. She usually wore it with The Cambridge Emeralds. Her Majesty inherited the necklace in 1953, but was never a fan of choker style necklaces and it remained unworn until 1981 when it was given to Princess Diana as a wedding present. Princess Diana enjoyed wearing the choker and on one occasion during a visit to Australia in 1985 wore it bandeau style on her forehead. The last time she wore the necklace was for her 36th birthday in 1997, just two months before her death. The necklace, was returned to Her Majesty after her death and remained in the vaults until today. The necklace was most likely inherited by King Charles who has loaned it to Catherine.

It was the first time in over 400 years that a King’s daughter married a “commoner”, the first royal wedding ever to be televised (an estimated 300 million viewers watched worldwide), and the first occasion on which a royal bride chose to wear a personally purchased tiara rather than one from the family collection. Margaret had kept her relationship with society photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones entirely out of the public eye. His identity as her future husband was not revealed until the official announcement of their engagement on 27 February 1960. Armstrong-Jones proposed with a ruby engagement ring designed as a rosebud - likely a subtle reference to Margaret’s middle name, Rose. A few months later, the wedding took place at Westminster Abbey. Margaret spent the night before at Clarence House and arrived at the Abbey in the Glass Coach, escorted by the Duke of Edinburgh, who accompanied her down the aisle in place of her father, King George VI, who had died in 1952. She wore a silk organza gown designed by the royal couturier Norman Hartnell. Elegant and relatively simple, with a V-neckline and long sleeves, the dress was designed to suit Margaret’s petite frame, yet required nearly 30 metres of fabric for the full skirt. She chose not to wear earrings, adding further brilliance only with the Lady Mount Stephen necklace, that had once belonged to Queen Mary.
