This tower in Amsterdam watched the old rampart since 1606. Between 1895 and 1897 it was under the Water Board and people called it Malle Jaap - Silly Jacob - because its clock ran wrong. The white building on the right was a primary school built in 1895.

Today the same tower is home to canal tour boats and the school is gone. Same tower, second life.

Rothenburg was a small Protestant town stuck between two big powers the Catholic Emperor and the Protestant Swedish King.

In October 1631 the Swedes took the town without a real fight. The German Catholic General Tilly was pi**ed.

Two weeks later Tilly came back with his whole army, surrounded Rothenburg on Oct 29th and started bombing it on Oct 30th. The town fought hard and killed 300 of his men, but then their gunpowder blew up.

The Swedes gave up and left. Tilly was ready to burn the whole city to the ground like his men did in Magdeburg a few months before.

The town council begged for mercy and proved they didn't betray his troops.

Tilly let the city live.

This square in Kortrijk was made in 1899 after the old cloth hall was knocked down. In 1940 the white building left of St. Martin's was Huis Patria, headquarters of a Catholic association.

In 1944 Allied air raids destroyed the facades around it, but St. Martin's Church and the belfry survived. Today the same square is car-free and Huis Patria is a showroom and apartments. Same place, second life.

This station in Pengam had two platforms for two different counties. In 1962 both were shut and the coal trains stopped forever.

Today, a single modern platform at Glan-y-nant carries daily commuters again. Same name, second life.
