Walhalla
rises above the Danube near Regensburg and looks like an ancient temple among the Bavarian hills. It was built by order of King Ludwig I of Bavaria: construction began in 1830, and the monument was officially opened on October 18, 1842. Architect Leo von Klenze was inspired by the Parthenon in Athens, which is why the building resembles a Greek temple. The name “Walhalla” comes from Germanic and Norse mythology, where it referred to the heavenly hall of heroes. Today, inside, you can find busts and memorial plaques dedicated to outstanding figures from the German-speaking world: writers, composers, scientists, and rulers. This place is impressive not only because of its history, but also because of its view: from the steps of Walhalla, one of the most beautiful views of the Danube opens up. Here, you can truly feel the scale of the past and the quiet atmosphere that makes the climb worth it.
