It is sad to announce that Professor Jason Arday has passed away at just 41 years old.

A husband. A father. A son. A friend.

Not a headline.
Not a DEI case study.
Not an argument for either side.
A human being.

We had been following the recent allegations, investigation and his resignation from Cambridge.

The allegations were serious and deserved proper scrutiny. Academic integrity matters. But neither can we pretend race was irrelevant to the wider conversation around him.

Jason became the youngest Black professor in Cambridge’s history.

He was celebrated as a symbol of possibility, and then his story became part of a much bigger debate about DEI, standards, Black excellence and representation.

Those of us who have ever been “the first”, “the only” or one of very few understand the weight that can come with that.

Your success becomes evidence of what is possible.

Your mistakes can become evidence for people who never believed you should have been there in the first place.

We do not know the circumstances surrounding his death and I will not speculate.

But we can hold two things at once.

Accountability matters.

Humanity matters too.

We can investigate, challenge and ask difficult questions without forgetting there is a human being at the centre of it all.

Tonight, I’m thinking about Jason Arday the person.

Remembering Chef Dom Taylor

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Chef Dom Taylor.

Dom wasn’t just an exceptional chef. He was a storyteller, a cultural ambassador and an entrepreneur who proudly championed Caribbean cuisine on some of Britain’s biggest stages.

It was an honour to feature Dom twice in Black Business Magazine.

The first came in our Money & Wealth Edition in October 2023, shortly after his television success, when we celebrated not only his culinary talent but his vision for the future.

The second was in our Startups Edition in August 2025, where he shared the story behind the launch of Marvee’s Food Shop, a restaurant that was far more than a business. It was a heartfelt tribute to his mother, Marveline, his heritage and the food that shaped his childhood.

During that interview, Dom spoke about creating something that honoured “food, joy” and where he came from. He believed Caribbean food deserved to be celebrated on its own terms, and he dedicated himself to telling those stories with authenticity, creativity and pride.

One answer, in particular, now feels especially poignant. When asked for the best advice he had ever received, he shared the words his mother gave him:

“Don’t let someone else write your story. Focus on the things that are within your control.”

He certainly wrote his own.

From fine dining kitchens to television screens, from his acclaimed residencies to building Marvee’s into a celebration of Caribbean culture, Dom proved that success never required leaving your roots behind.

Instead, he showed the industry that heritage could be innovation, that culture could be premium, and that authenticity would always have a place at the table.

His impact extends far beyond the plates he served. He inspired a generation of Black chefs, entrepreneurs and creatives to embrace their identity, own their stories and build something meaningful.

Our thoughts are with Dom’s family, friends, his team and everyone whose lives he touched.

Thank you, Dom, for sharing your gifts with the world and for allowing us to tell a small part of your story.
