Stepping into this park feels like entering a magical place. It’s like walking straight through the frame of an 18th-century landscape painting. We set out early with a woven wicker basket packed to the brim—sourdough, local farmhouse cheeses, punnets of sharp berries, and chilled elderflower cordial—determined to find the perfect pocket of green away from the rush of the world.
The grounds unfold in a series of living vignettes, exactly as Charles Hamilton intended hundreds of years ago. We wandered past the Serpentine Lake, watching swans slice quietly across glassy water, before spreading our linen blanket out on the gentle slope beneath the Gothic Temple. From up there, with the breeze whispering through the ancient cedars and sunlight flickering across the water, lunch felt like an unhurried, timeless ritual.
Between leisurely bites and iced drinks, the afternoon turned into an expedition of follies. We made our way down to the Crystal Grotto, where hundreds of thousands of sparkling calcite crystals catch the low, watery light in shimmering blues and greens, creating an ethereal, subterranean hideaway that feels completely suspended in another era. Later, we traced the woodland paths past the Ruined Abbey and strolled along the edge of the historic vineyard, entirely content to lose track of hours.
There is an intoxicating quiet to this corner of Cobham—a reminder of how restorative it is to trade screens for dappled light, historic stone, and the simple luxury of an afternoon spent grazing on good food under open skies.

Getting There from London
Train: London Waterloo to Esher (~30 mins via South Western Railway).
Bus: Catch the 715 bus toward Guildford from Esher (Littleworth Common / High Street stop) to Cobham, Between Streets (~15 mins). From there, it is a flat 5-minute walk to the entrance.
