🏠 WE’RE HOME… AND THIS YEAR’S SURPRISE IS… BALLOONS! 🎈😂

Well, we wondered what the girls and grandchildren had done to the house while we were away…

And this is what we came home to! 🤣

After the ducks, the googly eyes and last year’s Christmas takeover, they’ve clearly decided to go for maximum balloonage this time.

They’re literally everywhere! 😂🎈

🇳🇱🚐 That’s almost a wrap on our summer adventure!

We’ve had an absolutely brilliant time travelling around Europe this year. So many great places, family visits, markets, museums, hunebeds, walks, coffee, cake and plenty of unexpected moments along the way! 😂

We’ve met some lovely people, caught up with family and made loads of fantastic memories.

And our £200 Traditions & Treats Fund challenge? We actually managed to come home with around £15 still in it! 🎉😂

Now we’ve had a lovely visit with my sister, it’s time for the final leg.

No more ferries — just one last drive up the A1 and home. 🚐🇬🇧

But then comes the big question…

🏠👀 WHAT HAVE THE KIDS DONE TO OUR HOUSE?!

Ducks hidden everywhere one year 🦆
Googly eyes everywhere the next 👀
Then last year they decorated the whole house for Christmas! 🎄😂

We’ve absolutely no idea what they’ve done this time…

🇬🇧 And just like that… we’re nearly home!

The White Cliffs of Dover coming into view as we make our way back across the Channel. ❤️

It’s always a strange feeling seeing that coastline after several weeks away. Excited to get home, but at the same time there’s that little bit of sadness because another European adventure is coming to an end.

It’s been a cracking trip — Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and France, plenty of memories, plenty of food, some great park-ups and, most importantly, lots of time with family.

Just the final bit of the journey now… 🚐🇬🇧

🚐 Now this is a cracking little park-up! 🇧🇪

We’ve made it to Brasschaat in Belgium and found this one on Park4Night.

It’s a lovely wooded setting, there are only 10 camper pitches and, best of all… it’s completely FREE! 😁

It is quite close to a busy road, so there is some traffic noise. A couple of the more recent Park4Night comments say they weren’t particularly bothered by it, so hopefully we’ll have a peaceful night, so far it doesn’t seem too bad though.

It’s also only a short walk from the village centre, so for a free overnight stop on the way home, it’s pretty hard to complain!

And after all the effort we’ve put into keeping our park-up costs down this trip, finding a freebie like this is a great way to finish the challenge. 😂

Time for some lunch then a little walk into town for a look around and possibly a Belgian waffle or two!!!

🚐 Time to start the journey home! 🇳🇱➡️🇧🇪➡️🇫🇷🇬🇧

After another lovely stay in Hardenberg, it’s time to say goodbye to family and start making our way back towards the UK.

It’s been a brilliant few days here, and we’ve packed a lot into this stop — but now the homeward leg begins.

Today’s plan is to put some miles behind us and head towards Belgium, where we’ve found a free motorhome stop for the night. That should help keep the park-up challenge looking very healthy! 😂

Then it’s on towards Calais and the ferry home.

Not quite finished yet though… there’s still time for a few more adventures before this summer trip comes to an end. 🚐❤️

🍰🇳🇱 A lovely little surprise in Hardenberg!

The sports club next to the camperplaats has been holding an event all afternoon, and this evening we had a lovely surprise…

There was a knock on the motorhome door and we were offered some of the leftover cake! 🥰

And it wasn’t just us — they went around and offered cake to all the campers here. What a wonderfully thoughtful thing to do. ❤️

It’s these little unexpected moments that make travelling so special. No big fanfare, just a simple gesture of Dutch hospitality that really made our evening.

So tonight we’re enjoying a piece of cake and a cuppa in the Moho! ☕🍰

Pierre the Frenchman has arrived! 🇫🇷🧶

He’s the second member of our brand-new Van Companions collection, joining 🇬🇧 Bryan, the Englishman at the Beach.

Pierre comes complete with his beret, red neckerchief, blue-and-white stripes and, naturally, his baguette! 🥖😂

Just like Bryan, Pierre has been completely handmade using Ciska’s own original Van Companions design.

Something new is coming to Bobbin Along with Ciska…

Our brand-new Van Companions, designed and handmade entirely by Ciska, will be making their debut at the Van Club Rally in Orleton at the end of August! 🎉

🇬🇧 Bryan, the Englishman at the Beach, is complete and 🇫🇷 Pierre the Frenchman is currently on the hook.

Each one is approximately 12cm x 12cm and completely handmade, right down to the little details.

But before we decide on the price, we want to ask YOU!

Today we visited the Commonwealth War Graves in Hardenberg, and it was one of those places that really makes you stop and think.

Among the neatly kept graves are the remains of young airmen from Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand who lost their lives over this part of the Netherlands during the Second World War.

We learned the stories behind several of the crews — Halifax, Wellington and Lancaster bombers that were shot down while returning from raids over Germany. Some crews were lost together, while others had men who survived the crashes and went on to become prisoners of war or escape with the help of the Dutch resistance.

One crew in particular really caught our attention. Three of the men aboard Lancaster W4327 had previously survived another aircraft crash, only to lose their lives together when their Lancaster came down near Sibculo on 30 March 1943.

Looking at the headstones and reading the ages brings home just how young many of these men were. One was only 20.

These aren’t just names on stones. They were sons, brothers, friends and aircrew who never made it home.

Today, here in Hardenberg, they are still remembered.

At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them.
