Researchers at the University of Sydney are building Sydney’s first terrestrial gamma-radiation map. It provides a background level of radiation across the city which can be used in the case of a nuclear accident in the future.

We spoke with Matilda Lawton and Tengiz Ibrayev to discuss their work and gain an understanding of the basics of radiation, after our recent visit to Fukushima, Japan.

What if building back better isn't enough?

We're speaking with Dr Christian Dimmer (Wasada University, Tokyo) about how disaster resilience has evolved in Japan - from pre-modern times where people had a high level of disaster awareness, to today where catastrophes are seen as manageable by experts and authorities.

If we institutionalise and engineer our resilience, do citizens become disengaged?

Find out more as we approach the 15 year anniversary of the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, about what this means for the future of disaster resilience.

📺 We’re on the big screen! 📺

Our documentary was screened for the first time in Christchurch this week to emergency management experts from across the Canterbury region.

Antz Rohan from the Student Volunteer Army inspired the first episode of the podcast in Christchurch in 2021. Since then emergency management leaders, academics, volunteers and disaster experts have shared their stories and insights with Andrew and Joshua on the podcast.

'Right Help, Right Time' details how communities have mobilised to help in some of the largest disasters in recent history - along with lessons and insights from leaders around the world.

More screenings coming soon - or contact us to arrange a screening near you.

Human caused climate change is affecting our weather. It's affecting us now.

Ilan is a Professor of Disasters and Health at University College London.

When the power is out after a disaster - dirty diesel generators are set up to provide essential power. Diesel emissions are a breathing hazard as well as damaging to the environment.

It doesn't have to be this way. We travelled to New Orleans to visit non-profit organisation Footprint Project and their Technology Manager Nate Heegaard to learn how they are building back greener - deploying solar panels and other devices to decarbonise disaster response and recovery.
