Our love and gratitude to Heba Hayek and Zena Agha โ€” thank you for the care with which you held space for us to think and feel together โ€” and to Maqam Books, Mosaic Rooms and Pelican House for everything behind the scenes that makes these events possible.

Nur โ€” you brought us light. See you again soon ๐Ÿงก

Even though the solstice is behind us, summer is still hereโ€”and hotter this year than ever before.

Itโ€™s only fitting that, while simultaneously enjoying this season and reckoning with the increasingly apparent effects of climate change, we take time to reflect on our relationships to land.

How do we connect with and tend to the land, and how does the land connect with and tend to us? ๐ŸŒฑ

Thank you to everyone who joined us in a moment of suspension at Mosaic Rooms last night for the first London launch of Nur Turkmaniโ€™s remarkable debut collection, ๐˜–๐˜ค๐˜ต๐˜ฐ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ!

Nur spoke about decay, sunsets and the importance of being open to sadness and love in equal measure, posing to us the questions: โ€˜What does it take to sustain love? What is at stake when what we love is threatened?โ€™

Farhaana and Nur also reflected on place and relationality through the Mediterranean Sea and through poetry itself. Nur described poems as whispers; as maps and locations; as ways of feeling, archiving and sharing.

Thank you so much for coming and engaging so deeply with us ๐Ÿงก

Thanks especially to our wonderful collaborators, Maqam ู…ู‚ุงู… and Mosaic Rooms!

If you missed it, thereโ€™s still a chance to see Nur in London next week! On Tuesday, 4th August, sheโ€™ll be in conversation with fellow Hajar Press author Zena Agha at Pelican House. Entry is free; find out more via the link in our bio.

Congratulations to Bobuq Sayed on the publication of their extraordinary debut novel,

In Istanbul, two q***r Afghansโ€”Delbar and Mansurโ€”meet and find comfort in each other. Delbar has travelled from Washington, DC, Mansur from Afghanistan via Iran. As Turkish state repression escalates, their pathways to security diverge, and the fault lines between them become impossible to ignore.

Set in the 2010s, this fiercely anti-imperialist novel unravels complex dynamics and intimate choices shaped by passport privilege, displacement and border regimes. ๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ›‚

How do we grow alongside each other? What can we learn from each other? What does it mean to age, to care and to be cared for?

Weโ€™ll be joined this month by Nonki Azariah and The Feminist Libraryโ€™s Black Feminist Reading Group to reflect on relationships that span generations, looking at what these can teach us about care, sense of self and community ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿคโžฟ๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒณ

Please note, this monthโ€™s reading group is a closed session for Black people and people of colour.

From memories that travel generations to stories of migration, colonialism and climate change, waves move and connect us across time, space, ways of life and states of being.

Full of soulful fiction, poetry and essays from coastal cultures across the world โ€” Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Canada, Nigeria, Palestine, Bangladesh and more โ€” this is a book by and for children of the sea.
