Over N2trn Lost to D¥bious Subsidy Claims Under Former President Jonathan’s Administration — Businessman Femi Otedola

Billionaire businessman, Femi Otedola, has alleged that more than ₦2 trillion was siphoned through questionable petrol subsidy claims during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

In a statement on Monday, Otedola backed the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in its ongoing dispute with the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN).

DAPPMAN had accused the refinery of destabilizing the market with its fuel price cuts, but Dangote countered, claiming the group demanded an annual subsidy of ₦1.5 trillion to enable members match its depot prices.

Otedola, however, maintained that the subsidy regime was deliberately structured to benefit depot owners, making DAPPMAN members the biggest beneficiaries.

“I warned President Jonathan at the time that he was being misled. The system encouraged rent-seeking and corruption. Over ₦2 trillion was siphoned through dubious claims tied to depot licences,” he said.

He further dismissed the notion that depots significantly create jobs, noting that a typical facility employs only a handful of people, unlike filling stations that hire dozens.

Otedola urged DAPPMAN members to shift their focus to retail operations rather than holding on to depots designed for an import-driven fuel economy, which, according to him, has become redundant with Nigeria now refining locally.

He likened the development to the transformation of Nigeria’s cement industry, where reliance on import terminals gave way to domestic production.

Soldier Sentenced to De@th for K+lling Tricycle Rider in Bauchi State

A General Court Martial sitting at Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, Jos, has sentenced Private Lukman Musa of the 3 Division, Nigerian Army, to de@th by h@nging for the m¥rder of a tricycle (Keke) rider, Abdulrahman Isa, in Bauchi State.

The verdict, delivered on Thursday, September 18, 2025, by the court’s president, Brigadier General Liafis Bello, found Musa guilty of m¥rder, culpable h%micide, and unlawful possession of amm¥nition.

Court proceedings revealed that Musa, alongside an accomplice identified as Oba, lured Isa to his residence under the guise of helping him move his belongings. He then str¥ck Isa on the head with a wooden object before str@ngling him to de@th. To conceal the crime, Musa st¥ffed the v+ctim’s body in a sack and d¥mped it between Shira and Yala villages, while Isa’s tricycle was later sold.

Musa was also found in possession of 34 rounds of 7.62mm special amm¥nition without authorization.

In his ruling, Gen. Bello described Musa’s actions as “b@rbaric and he@rtless,” noting that he had betrayed the Army’s duty to safeguard citizens.
“You merc+lessly metamorphosed from a defender of citizens to a k+ller. Your action is an embarrassment and disgr@ce to the Nigerian Army,” Bello declared.

The soldier was sentenced under Section 220 of the Penal Code and will face de@th by h@nging as stipulated under Section 221.

NIS to Deliver Passports Within One Week, Scales Up Production Capacity to 4,000–5,000 Daily

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) plans to deliver passports to Nigerians within one week, following the centralisation of passport production for the first time in 62 years.

Minister of Interior Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo announced this on Thursday during an inspection of the new Centralised Passport Personalisation Centre at the NIS Headquarters in Abuja.

“The project is 100 per cent ready. Nigeria can now be more productive and efficient in delivering passport services,” Tunji-Ojo said.

He explained that old machines could only produce 250 to 300 passports daily, but the new system had a capacity of 4,500 to 5,000 passports every day.

“With this, NIS can now meet daily demands within just four to five hours of operation,” he added, describing it as a game-changer for passport processing in Nigeria.

“We promised two-week delivery, and we’re now pushing for one week.

“Automation and optimisation are crucial for keeping this promise to Nigerians,” the minister said.

He noted that centralisation, in line with global standards, would improve uniformity and enhance the overall integrity of Nigerian travel documents worldwide.

He said the centralised production system aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s reform agenda, boosting NIS capacity and changing the narrative for better service delivery.
