80s SNAPSHOTS | FRIDAY NIGHT OUT WITH THE LEICESTER CITY BABY SQUAD

Leicester City’s Baby Squad. Friday night, 1984. Steve Pyke caught up with the notorious firm on the town - looking sharp, in all the on-trend gear, making these snapshots look more like pages from a style mag than a firm out on the lash. But behind the casual swagger was intent: These lads and lasses weren’t just dressing the part. Friday night was for pints, bonds, and plotting Saturday’s away. Clothes, culture and football.

Stéphane Meunier, the eye behind cult documentary Les Yeux dans les Bleus, shares intimate scenes of the French national team during France ‘98. From Barthez to Zidane, Thuram to Desailly, his raw shots show the stars as brothers chasing history. A tender look at the World Cup that changed everything. France would go on to win the competition on home soil, famously beating Brazil in the final.

The wonderful photos were brought back to life, and showcased earlier this month at an exhibition in Paris.

Who Let the Drog Out?!

Chelsea share 'unseen' pool party shots from Munich 2012 - just in time for their Bayern showdown. That night at the Allianz Arena, the hosts were favourites. But Chelsea, under interim boss Roberto Di Matteo, ripped up the script. Didier Drogba’s late header dragged it to penalties, and the Blues held their nerve in front of 65,000. Drogba, UEFA’s man of the match, wasn’t done there. Judging by these photos, he ran the pool party too - dunking Gary Cahill before making sure Di Matteo got soaked. Captured by club photographer Darren Walsh, the photos resurfaced this week - pure nostalgia for every Chelsea fan.

Rub-a-dub-dub, two rock stars in a tub - Rock superstars Elton John and Rod Stewart share a bath at Watford’s ground. Lifelong football fans, both are as passionate about the game as they are about music. Fresh from a U.S. tour, Elton has just been named vice-president of Watford F.C. and is preparing to invest in his boyhood club. On 7 November 1973, he joined the squad for training to keep fit and show his support. 📸 Charles Ley

Scallies. Casuals. Perry Boys. Endlessly discussed, immortalised on the silver screen in gratuitously violent films, but often misunderstood by those who weren’t there. Make no mistake, this is football’s most important subculture. It changed everything. Beginning in the UK before spreading across the globe, its influence can still be felt and seen pretty much anywhere communities gather to watch people play football. And yet, so many attempts to document, or define what ‘casual’ means have missed the mark.

So we spoke to the man who published the greatest book that has ever been written on the subject. Phil Thornton spent years researching and writing, interviewing the people who were actually there for his book ‘Casuals’ which explores one of the most overlooked youth movements of all time.

In our latest issue, Phil reflects on the creation of his book, what it all means now, and why the movement continues to be an enduring sense of inspiration for how you and all of your mates dress when they go to the football.

This cover has been brought to life magnificently by the legend , with more illustrations by the big man himself inside.
