AI just crossed another line from digital to biological.

Researchers at Stanford and the Arc Institute used genome language models to design 285 new bacteriophage genomes. In lab testing, 16 became functional viruses capable of infecting bacteria and reproducing.

These were bacteriophages, viruses that target bacteria, not humans. The research could open new paths for tackling antibiotic resistant infections, especially as existing treatments become less effective.

But the bigger story is what this represents.

AI is moving beyond generating text, images and video. It can now generate biological code that produces functional organisms in the real world.

The researchers built safeguards around human viruses, while also acknowledging that specialized training could potentially weaken certain protections.

Generative biology is no longer theoretical.
