The Kenya African National Union (KANU) party National Chairman Gideon Moi has bowed out of the Baringo Senatorial race in the forthcoming by-elections following a series of meetings held with President William Ruto.

According to KANU Secretary General George Wainaina, the party will not field a candidate in the County, leaving the field open for united Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Kiprono Cheburet Chemitei and five other candidates to compete.

Reports indicated that two leaders had engaged in three previous meetings in recent times, with President Ruto appealing to Moi to bow out of the race in favour of UDA's candidate.

After receiving public endorsement and praise from ODM leader Raila Odinga and his officials, governor Johnson Sakaja may be on his way to joining the opposition. However, analysts warn that he will face competition from two party aspirants for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat.
There is growing speculation that Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja may ditch the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) for Raila Odinga’s opposition Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in a bid to launch his re-election campaign for the 2027 polls successfully.

Sakaja, 40, has been an ally of President William Ruto, but in recent weeks, he has been cosying up to ODM politicians, fuelling speculation that he is planning to join the main opposition party.

On 10 February, Sakaja was among key politicians who joined ODM leaders at a prayer function organised by the party’s women’s league in Nairobi. The event was held in support of Raila’s bid for the African Union Commission Chairperson post, which he is seeking this weekend in Addis Ababa. During the function, Sakaja strongly hinted at his interest in joining the opposition, announcing that he would meet ODM leaders in Nairobi for talks in the next two weeks.

“The signs of rainfall are heavy clouds. Whoever has eyes should not be reminded to read the signs,” he said, amid cheers from ODM members.

There was a low turnout in several parts of the country as the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) kicked off mass voter registration on Tuesday ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The exercise was launched on Monday in Kajiado County as the commission targets to register 6.3 million new voters and help voters wishing to transfer their registration details to different polling stations.

As of Tuesday mid-morning in Marsabit County, a small number of new voters have been registered, as not many residents turned up for the exercise.
