After receiving public endorsement and praise from ODM leader Raila Odinga and his officials, governor Johnson Sakaja may be on his way to joining the opposition. However, analysts warn that he will face competition from two party aspirants for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat.
There is growing speculation that Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja may ditch the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) for Raila Odinga’s opposition Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in a bid to launch his re-election campaign for the 2027 polls successfully.
Sakaja, 40, has been an ally of President William Ruto, but in recent weeks, he has been cosying up to ODM politicians, fuelling speculation that he is planning to join the main opposition party.
On 10 February, Sakaja was among key politicians who joined ODM leaders at a prayer function organised by the party’s women’s league in Nairobi. The event was held in support of Raila’s bid for the African Union Commission Chairperson post, which he is seeking this weekend in Addis Ababa. During the function, Sakaja strongly hinted at his interest in joining the opposition, announcing that he would meet ODM leaders in Nairobi for talks in the next two weeks.
“The signs of rainfall are heavy clouds. Whoever has eyes should not be reminded to read the signs,” he said, amid cheers from ODM members.
