After the creation of Pakistan, the State Bank of Pakistan issued a 10-rupee note in 1950. At that time, the value of the rupee was such that a school teacher’s salary was Rs. 50, a police officer’s salary (Thanaidar) was Rs. 65, and most government employees earned less than Rs. 100 per month.
A laborer’s daily wage was Rs. 1, and residential land could be purchased for Rs. 100 per marla. At weddings, it was customary to give Rs. 1 or 2 as a gift (neotra). Wheat cost Rs. 6 per maund, gold was Rs. 60 per tola, mutton was Rs. 2 per kilo, and the monthly rent for an average house was around Rs. 10.
