A Cotswolds manor house with a Dutch heart. Dyrham Park was built in the 1690s for William Blathwayt, whose fortune came from serving Dutch-born King William III, formerly William of Orange.

In a beautiful setting on the western edge of the Cotswolds, near Bath, Dyrham is full of 17th century Dutch art and artefacts, including the trompe l'oeil painting by Samuel van Hoogstraten made to look like a corridor of rooms continues beyond the wall.

As someone who likes to walk solo, Australian trails can sometimes feel a bit remote and scary.

Byron Trail 9 started out on nice open roads but when I reached a 'private road' sign I had to turn down a path that looked a bit spooky. It was a marked trail. I'd seen cats parked at the other end, and I could see on Google maps it was only a short stretch so I ennt for it.

Good decision. I didn't see anything or anyone scary but I did see a creek and an amazing cliff-edge waterfall which was quite exhilarating.

Queen of the Cotswolds, long may she reign! Painswick earnt it's royal nickname in the 1600s, when the wool trade made it one of the wealthiest towns in the region. Four hundred years on, its as regal as ever with it's honey-coloured buildings, famous churchyard featuring 99 clipped yew trees, and views across the valley where of course I went for a walk. A must-visit in the southern Cotswolds.

These days my perfect travel day has to involve a walk. When I visited Burford, that led me to this lovely 4.5 mile circular. It starts at the bridge at the bottom of The Hill before heading out through open farmland, stiles, cows and horses towards Fulbrook.

The highlight was the wide green valley on the way to Widford and the tiny, 13th century St Oswald's Church - one of the remaining signs of a medieval village that disappeared long ago. From Widford, the walk crosses the River Windrush and follows the peaceful water meadows back into the centre of Burford.

Burford is all about 'The Hill' but should you park at the bottom and walk to the top, or park at the top and walk to the bottom? I visited on a Bank Holiday weekend and somehow managed to get it right. I arrived early and parked at the top of Barns Lane, which connects to The Hill via a quiet walkway. I took in the views, grabbed a fantastic, Australian-quality coffee at Lynwood & Co cafe, walked the village and was back to my car before the crowds got too crazy.
