Designed by Sir William Chambers in the late 18th century, this grand rotunda staircase sweeps over five storeys in the South Wing. It was originally called the Navy Stair because it led up to the Navy Board Rooms, where the Navy Board held meetings that were sometimes attended by Admiral Lord Nelson after they moved into Somerset House in 1789.

The staircase we see today is a careful 1950s reconstruction. The original Nelson Stair suffered severe bomb damage in the Blitz in 1940 and was rebuilt by Sir Albert Richardson using the original plans that had been kept safe at Sir John Soane’s House in Lincoln’s Inn Fields.

This is the Friends Meeting House on Mount Street and the golden post box right outside.

This Grade II listed building has been home to the Quakers since 1795. The current building was designed by Richard Lane and finished in the early 1830s in a Greek Classical style, modelled on the Temple of Ilissus. During the Peterloo Massacre it became a refuge and first aid post for people fleeing St Peter’s Field, and it has since hosted campaigns for peace, abolition of slavery and social justice.

The golden post box on the corner of Lloyd Street and Albert Square was painted gold in 2012 to celebrate cyclist Philip Hindes, who won team sprint gold for Team GB at the London Olympics alongside Jason Kenny and Sir Chris Hoy. Royal Mail later confirmed it would stay gold as a permanent legacy to Manchester’s Olympic cyclists.
