The CEO of Italian infrastructure giant Snam revealed in an interview that the same pipelines used to transport gas from different countries all over the world can also be used to deliver hydrogen that has been produced using renewable sources, as well as biofuels.

Different percentages of blending – including 100% hydrogen – have been tried and tested by Snam and have yielded positive results.

As a versatile energy carrier, hydrogen has a diverse range of applications giving it great potential to decarbonise several sectors, like industry and transport. And with an already established pipeline infrastructure, time and costs can be saved.

A large blaze occurred at Victoria's "big battery" facility in Australia over the weekend. The Tesla Megapack burned for more than three days before firefighters brought it under control.

The energy storage site – one of the largest in the world – was safely isolated from the electricity grid meaning the fire did not impact the electricity supply in the area.

The 300MW battery project being produced by French renewable energy giant Neoen was registered with the energy market operator on 28 July indicating the fire took place during testing.

The Canadian company, General Fusion – backed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos – has announced it will be building a nuclear fusion facility in the village of Culham, near Oxford, together with the UK Atomic Energy Authority.

The demonstration plant will be a proof-of-concept to display the Magnetised Target Fusion technology before the company goes on to build its first commercial facility.

Nuclear fusion is still an experimental energy source, unlike its alternative fission. The collision of two atoms to form one heavier atom would theoretically produce much more power than fission, as well as far fewer radioactive byproducts, indicating its highly sought after technology.

Construction of the plant will begin in 2022 and it is expected to open three years later.

Danish toy giant Lego has revealed its breakthrough in finding a suitable green alternative to the oil-based plastic currently used to manufacture its renowned toy bricks.

The exact composite will be made from a mix of recycled plastic bottles and a strengthening additive that will ensure the shape, feel and safety for children.

Lego expects to bring the prototype to market in 18 to 24 months, meanwhile, it continues to test the material on various brick types.

The announcement comes after a volatile period for Bitcoin due to environmental concerns expressed by influential players in the market.

Square Inc. will invest up to $5 million in the project with blockchain firm Blockstream providing infrastructure and expertise to build and manage the open-source facility.

Whilst renewable energy is already used in mining operations throughout the world, the partners believe that the transparent nature of the project will become a model that other business can learn from and help accelerate cryptocurrencies towards a more sustainable future.

A freely accessible dashboard is also being developed which will show real-time metrics of the project’s performance, including power output and mined bitcoin.

In a landmark United Nations report, the conversation on how to best address the upcoming climate catastrophe has shifted from longer-term carbon dioxide reduction to drastically cutting methane emissions.

Currently, about 60% of global methane emissions are due to human activities and the involvement in industries like oil and gas, agriculture, landfills, wastewater treatment and coal mining. Compared to carbon dioxide, methane surpasses its global warming potential by 85 times.

Inger Andersen, executive director of the U.N. Environment Programme stated, "cutting methane is the strongest lever we have to slow climate change over the next 25 years and complements necessary efforts to reduce carbon dioxide".

The report also mentioned the benefits to public health and crop maintenance by reducing the dangerous air pollutant, which is responsible for creating ground-level ozone.

Wento, a specialist onshore ready-to-build developer has been acquired by Equinor from private equity firm Enterprise Investors in a deal worth €91m. The deal includes a 1.6 GW solar project pipeline in Poland, which "strengthens and diversifies" Equinor's Polish portfolio, currently consisting of a 50% ownership of 1.44 GW worth of offshore wind projects.

The deal occurs at a time where a number of solar renewable energy companies have set their sights on Poland as Europe’s next growth market.

What to do with wind turbine blades once they've finished generating renewable electricity? A question that has disturbed many companies involved in the sector after numerous attempts at solving the problem.

However, a recent collaboration between the University of Strathclyde, Aker Offshore Wind, and others are focusing on scaling up and commercialising a process centred around recycling glass-reinforced polymer composites that are used in wind turbine blades.

The system allegedly concentrates on the “thermal recovery and post-treatment of glass fibres” from composite scrap, resulting in “near-virgin quality glass fibres”, giving the re-usable composite waste an alternative to ending up in landfill.

Blade waste could reach up to 400,000 tons a year in 2030 given the rising popularity of wind energy. Therefore, reaching a sustainable waste solution is a crucial step towards any net-zero target.

Icelandic start-up Carbfix is currently building a hub, dubbed the Coda Terminal, that can turn carbon dioxide into underground rock using a technique that imitates and accelerates the natural process of mineralising carbon.

The solution comes at a time when carbon capture and storage projects are visioned crucial to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Interest in the company's technology is "very high", as Carbfix estimates the total investment will range between €190-220 million. The service will be accessible for businesses in Northern Europe starting in 2025 with the carbon dioxide to be transported to Iceland in specially designed ships.
