Formed in 1979 by Jeff Conolly (better known as Mono Mann or Monoman) after the breakup of his earlier proto-punk outfit DMZ, LYRES channeled a manic, organ-driven sound—think Farfisa-fueled frenzy, reverb-soaked guitars, and Conolly’s distinctive, snarling vocals—that paid homage to ‘60s nuggets while injecting a fierce, uncompromising edge.

Today, in March 2026, Jeff Conolly faces one of his toughest battles yet: a diagnosis of bladder cancer. The treatment—chemotherapy, pre-surgery medications, and mounting medical debt—has been financially crushing, prompting him to launch a GoFundMe campaign to help cover costs and aim for being cancer-free by the end of the year. If you were lucky enough to see the Lyres play in the 80s then you know the energy level that rose once they got on the stage and continued to rise during their set. The sold out crowd would groove almost immediately, and I always remember Jen on the dance floor digging into the groove! Do yourself a favor and check out Rick Harte’s amazing label aceofheartsrecords.com. Jeff Connely wrote some of my favorites songs ever., “She pays the rent,” “How do you know,” “Help you Ann” and the iconic “ Don’t give it up now!”. My good friend JG thinks “love me till the sun shines” is the best song he ever heard. The Lyres and Jeff are a national treasure!
