My experience as a Teacher in South London and working with pupil referral units have highlighted scenarios where the UK Education system may hold lower expectations of ethnically diverse groups, they receive lower prediction grades. This is why I believe more needs to be done within the Education sector to remove harmful stereotypes and bias.
The UK education system can often be the first cause of trauma for many learners.
Learners with Special Educational Needs and learners who are considered bold, assertive, or confident, may be “written off – or stigmatised because they are misunderstood.
Bullying and racism experienced in school at a young age really scar learners, impact self esteem and limit personal and academic progression, if they do not have the right support systems.
In line with The KANVAS mission, I aim to help mixed or dual heritage learners in particular, to feel seen personally and be seen academically.
This Haircare and Skincare class is designed to improve mental health and build confidence.
Improve wellbeing, whilst nurturing behaviours, encouraging self care and boosting self esteem.
Despite great efforts, social acceptance is much harder for them, encouraging feelings of frustration, Instead of a fun and a fulfilling learning experience. School, college or society can become a breeding ground for anxiety and a battleground for self development.
KANVAS support young people, who have special educational needs or mental health struggles and recognise, sometimes learning may take longer for a student who feels different from their peers, both academically and socially.
These Enrichment Masterclasses are interactive, fun and inclusive, promoting social skills, dexterity, self-care and mental wellbeing.
