All praise and boundless gratitude be to Allah Almighty, who has ordained the month of Rabīʿ al-Awwal to be the season of the Blessed Birth, the springtide of our hearts.

Belief in the unseen, or ghayb, is a cornerstone of īmān. However, the ghayb is relative—what is hidden from one person may be seen or known by another. Perhaps it is the loss of īmān in the unseen world generally that has led to the juncture we are at—where the phantoms of ghosts and animated spectres crowd the screens of our young children’s excited minds.

The degree to which our Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ knew the full extent of the ghayb has been controversial for centuries, sparking widespread discourse throughout. Among the most prominent discussions on this topic was the Baraylawī-Barzanjī dispute of the Fourteenth Century AH, which generated extensive literature and contrasting perspectives.

In this paper, Dr. Taibeh seeks to navigate the issues of the ghayb raised by the ʿulamāʾ—identifying what all Muslims agree upon—while conceding room for scholarly differences from among the Ahl al-Sunna. Having established the core principles, Dr. Taibeh clarifies that secondary details remain open to legitimate debate.

The contention over the importance of the night of mid-Shaʿbān, and more particularly its appropriate honouring—long a matter of respectful scholarly debate—has, more recently, and particularly in the light of national celebrations of one sort or another, become a divisive issue. What has to be read between the lines is the potential for discord that such issues provoke in distracting the ʿulamāʾ from more essential concerns facing the Umma today.

In this paper, Dr. Alarfaj continues the noble tradition of the original Salaf by carefully laying out the divergence of views and indeed legitimating the differing positions—to a point. Without abandoning the fine adab of the principle of scholarly debate, he reveals the scope of valid dispute in this particular issue, while highlighting the negligence of some who deem this subsidary issue to be of key importance.

The muʾminūn conceal faults, show mercy, express compassion, and refrain from blaming or shaming others. Conversely, the misguided expose faults, shame others, spread despair, and drive people to lose hope, even to the extent of declaring them kāfir.

‘Follow the money’, the dictum of both the detective and the investigative journalist, necessarily implies that a crime has been committed. The dimensions of that crime in this case are simply so staggering that it is almost impossible for modern people to see; can the fish see the water in which it swims? The advice to the young man and woman in these circumstances is exactly the opposite: do not follow the money—because it is the very epitome of the deception being perpetrated—but by all means seek wealth, never forgetting its definition by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: “Wealth is the heart’s wealth.”

This book maps the territory between these two extremes, and traces generally untaught historical events to disclose a phenomenon that once seen could change your life. Within living memory, narratives of happier, more hopeful, lives have been replaced by disenchantment, and by a growing servitude to an increasingly machine-like world through an addiction to the fuel of that world: money, or so it is commonly called. In fact, as Clarke shows, money is nothing but debt, which produces an indebtedness that we all share, and—who would credit it?—one which we have to pay for.

Looking up, this Dīn of ours has been described as "a good tree whose roots are firm and whose branches reach to heaven" [Qurʾān 14:24]. Yet before naturally reaching for the fruits in Paradise, we must understand their root system.

Before you here is a microscope focussing on the tendrils of the roots of Muslim law—the Uṣūl al-Fiqh. The storms of the age and the decay of Western values can be averted by grounding one’s faith: Islam.

Dr. Eldoghim, renowned curator of Muslim manuscripts, opens with the history of Uṣūl al-Fiqh and the scholars who planted and nursed its growth. The second part examines its root concepts and their down to earth application within legal theory. The value of planting such a tree—in the times we live in—should not be lost on students or anyone interested in deepening an understanding of the protective shade that tree provides.
