Sad to hear Calvin Hayes, the British musician and co-founder of 1980s pop band Johnny Hates Jazz, has died at the age of 63 after collapsing at his home. The keyboardist and drummer was found dead at his property in Washington in the US, his wife Kathy has confirmed. Hayes rose to performing in Johnny Hates Jazz in 1986 alongside singer Clark Datchler and bassist Mike Nocito.

Without Syd Barrett, there would have been no Pink Floyd. Their music never dates; it feels timeless. They were utterly unique, and people remain as fascinated by their origins today as when they first heard them.

They sounded unlike anyone else when they started in the 60’s. They were not simply imitating Black American music, as so many British bands were then doing; this was something entirely new and exciting. As Nick Kent once observed, Pink Floyd seemed to arrive fully formed from the very beginning, and much of that was due to Syd’s startling talent as both a songwriter and a musician experimenting with new sounds using what was, by today’s standards, primitive equipment.

Alongside The Beatles, Syd Barrett pushed the boundaries of instrumental innovation. While The Beatles were recording Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band down the hall at Abbey Road Studios, Pink Floyd were working on The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Through avant-garde experiments with backwards guitar techniques and multi-track recording, Syd explored far beyond the limits of conventional popular music.

Syd’s forward-thinking techniques grew out of his grounding in art — he studied at Camberwell College of Arts — and his interest in jazz improvisation, before Pink Floyd. He was inspired by Keith Rowe and the free improvisation group AMM in London during 1965. Rowe radically transformed guitar playing by abandoning traditional tuning and laying the instrument flat on a tabletop, even rolling ball bearings across the frets.

Syd developed his own equally unconventional approach, playing slide guitar with a Zippo lighter and wiring his instrument through two Binson Echorec units, using sound like a painter uses colour.

It’s well documented that Syd went from Cambridge to outer space, but never returned. He’d gone beyond reach. The most soaring and poignant moments in Pink Floyd’s career after that have to do with reaching out to someone who has ‘gone beyond reach’. So in a way, Syd never left.

Everyone with any interest at all in contemporary British music seems to have an opinion about Syd Barrett, and what happened to him. But no one really knows which is why the myths have endured and his work speaks to every new generation.

Clowns and Jugglers is an official release, whilst could be called a “Tribute album”, the project co-ordinators are at lengths to say it is more a “celebration” than a tribute. Featuring many exclusive tracks from the likes of Kula Shaker, Soft Machine, Voyage 35, Robyn Hitchcock (featuring John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin fame), Henge and Tom Bowness to but name a few. That coupled with the last ever live performance of Pink Floyd themselves, all very fitting that they should end their live career where it started, not to mention a certain Mr David Bowie making an appearance – this Celebration of both Syd and his music is a must not only for Floyd fans – which there are alot, but music lovers in general.

This massive turnout, one of the largest for a solo artist in European history, was a testament to Collins' enduring popularity across generations in Romania. The atmosphere was electric with anticipation, charged by a collective awareness that they were about to witness a historic moment in the heart of Eastern Europe.

The 1989 concert by Pink Floyd on a floating stage in Venice remains one of the most legendary and controversial live events in rock history. Staged on July 15th to an estimated audience of nearly 200,000 people crammed into every available space along the canals and piazzas, the free performance was intended as a gift to the city and a global television event. The band performed a majestic setlist heavily focused on their then-current album, A Momentary Lapse of Reason, while also weaving in classics like "Comfortably Numb" and "Wish You Were Here," all against the breathtaking backdrop of St. Mark's Basin and the Doge's Palace.

However, the concert was swiftly engulfed in controversy. Local officials and conservationists were fiercely critical, arguing that the immense sound volume—peaking at an estimated 100 decibels—posed a grave risk of damaging the historic city's fragile architecture and ancient mosaics. The sheer size of the crowd, which far exceeded initial predictions, created a logistical nightmare, straining Venice's infrastructure to its limit. Global viral sensations The Marsh Family announce release of debut album

The Marsh Family, the unique musical group (and real-life family) who first became global viral sensations six years ago at the start of the pandemic, announce the release of their debut album Hollow Chapters. The group will be performing two special launch concerts and a livestream showcasing the new album in April 2026 at The Garlinge Theatre (Canterbury) and The Alexander Centre (Faversham).

An album with reflection, resilience, journey, and elemental connections at its core, Hollow Chapters is a collection of original songs written and performed by the Marsh Family - Dad (Ben, 49), Mum (Danielle, 48), sons Alfie (19) and Tom (18), and daughters Ella (16) and Tess (14). Recently featured in The Observer, the multi-instrumentalist family group of six from Kent have a significant international online following passionate about their mix of folk-pop harmonies, uplifting messages, authentic imperfections, and sense of connection and heart.

Hollow Chapters ranges across genres (from acoustic protest songs to funk and reggae rock), but has a vintage organic style, rooted in natural analogies, ideas of journey and lifecycle, and epic and inspirational themes. Hollow Chapters promises to move people emotionally, whether through ballads about departed loved ones or stirring tracks designed to forge collective action and hope. The songs tell stories using the different voices of family members, drawing inspiration from poetry, landscape, and artefacts.

Hollow Chapters blends the spirit and heart of folk with the energy and dynamism of pop - featuring the British family's trademark vocal harmonies and characterful performances.

Having hoarded their own original writing for over a year, while sharing many hilarious viral parodies, the family now deliver sonic stories inspired by Greek mythology (‘Hollow Chapters’), their experiences of anger (‘A New Way’), grief, and loss (‘You Were Gone’), nostalgia for traditions (‘The Falconer’) and objects (‘Artefact’), and heroes of the modern age such as the songs memorialising the courage of Russian activist Alexei Navalny (‘Sit for the Road’) or the protestors in Iran (‘Zan Zendegi Azadi’). Though the pieces are refracted by their different lenses as teenagers or parents in a world under strain, they all return to themes of solidarity and support (‘Fingertips’) - perhaps most evocatively brought out in their bigger orchestral builds (‘Poor Wayfaring Stranger’).

The album project was funded by a successful crowdfunding campaign in autumn 2025 that means they will be creating their first limited-edition vinyl.

This little known album from 1968 was actually almost the first official solo album by a Beatle and was the first LP to be released on the band’s Apple records, and it is totally unjustly overlooked. I say almost, because of the soundtrack to the film of the Family Way (1966) which was credited to Paul McCartney and George Martin, although McCartney did little apart from hum the main two themes to Martin for him to write down, score, arrange, and have recorded.

After years of insanely hard work, when the 1966 world tour was completed, and the band – especially George – had decided that they would do no more, the band took the rest of the year off and concentrated on solo projects. John went to Spain where he made a movie called How I won the War, and George flew to India, took sitar lessons and started to compose the music which could appear on this album.

The album features such notables as classical pianist and orchestral arranger John Barham, while other contributors include Indian classical musicians Aashish Khan, Shivkumar Sharma, Shankar Ghosh and Mahapurush Misra. The Western music features contributions from Tony Ashton and his band the Remo Four, as well as guest appearances by Eric Clapton and Ringo Starr.

It is the soundtrack to the film of the same name telling the story of the reclusive, eccentric scientist Oscar Collins (Jack MacGowran) who has two next-door neighbours: a pop photographer and his girlfriend/model Penny Lane (Jane Birkin). Discovering a beam of light streaming through a hole in the wall between them, Collins follows the light and spots Penny modelling for a photo shoot. He begins to make more holes as days go by and becomes a Peeping Tom as they do more photo sessions. Oscar gradually becomes infatuated with the girl, and feels a part of the couple's lives, even forsaking work to observe them. When they quarrel and the couple splits, Penny takes an overdose of pills and passes out, but Oscar comes to her rescue.
