Why is a 33 km wide waterway so hard to secure?
The Strait of Hormuz carries a fifth of the world's oil and gas. But the
tactics used there don't look like traditional naval warfare.
Instead of matching warship for warship, the approach relies on large
numbers of small, fast boats operating together. Analysts call it
asymmetric warfare — low cost, hard to track, and difficult for large
vessels to respond to in narrow waters.
The geography is the whole point. The strait narrows to 33 km, and the
shipping lanes inside it are only about 3 km wide each. There is very
little room to manoeuvre.
